I just got a cool new camera but i live in a shitty ghetto so i'm scared to take pictures outside.

Get swole, carry a weapon, keep your head on a swivel, and leave the ghetto whenever possible. If DC wasn't a no-gun zone I'd carry a pistol and go take photos of the hoods in Southeast

Carry a second camera, or keep it in a bag until you need it and after you finish put it back in your bag. You can also get a metal reinforced camera strap.
