However, I do quite the opposite from this advice:
* Set shutterspeed to whatever I want, usually like 1/30th or 1/60th.
* Set aperture to f/2 or f/2.8 or something (sometimes f/4).
* Set ISO to 1600 - 3200-ish
* Handhold flash, no diffuser bullshit, doesn't help, sometimes a stofen if I want multiple people.
* Either use TTL or just set flash power to 1/16th (normally OK). I've noticed that TTL sometimes goes completely haywire when they have strobe lights, so manual flash is normally a safe bet.
Depending on the lighting, this gets you some kind of environment light. The mild flash power ensures you can fire of at least a burst of 5 or so without having to recycle.
Never too worried about focus, if it's problematic I'll go to f/4 or smaller.
Advantage is that with TTL I can use rear curtain, but for 1/60th that's not really needed. Rear curtain comes into play if you'd do 1/15th or slower.
