In terms of handling, the AE-1 doesn't have a great system for seeing what your settings are within the viewfinder, basically you set your shutter speed, half press, and get the aperture you should set.
The X-7A, you set your aperture and you can see your current shutter speed and the recommended shutter speed within the viewfinder.
I recommend you look into the Minolta cameras more than the Canon's.
