Canon AE-1 is by no means a shit camera, it was just mass-produced in the 80s and marketed extremely well. It just lacks features and design features found in Nikons.
I got for £20 in a yard sale, so I don't exactly think that is a terrible deal at all, combined with decent glass - I took a lot of good snaps with it.
I totally get why people go for it; 1) it's everywhere, 2) Cheap, so it's not a massive commitment 3), simple to use. Combine the first two points and it's going to be a film SLR that people will be exposed to the most. Nikon goes ballsdeep into weird nomenclature of models and their differences.
I used the AE-1 for 5 years, and after "gitting gud" I decided to graduate from this amateur camera, to something more serious.
Most "normies" don't have a fucking clue what the differences are between brands, or care. I've seen people go up to those vintage shop jews and ask for "the camera that can take black and white photos", only to be met with sneering and eye rolling. I love it when more normies and vintage-trendwhores get on the scene, it means I can shill my old stuff and make basically all my money back.
