The basic process is this:
go into your totally dark room (or bag) with your paterson tank, the roll of film, a pair of scissors and a can opener. turn off the lights, wait for a couple minutes for your eyes to adjust (since it might not actually be totally dark). Grab your roll of film and the can opener and pop open the top. Pull out the spool inside and prepare for film to go everywhere. Scrabble around in the dark and film the leader of the film. Grab your scissors and cut the leader off, leaving a rounded section. Grab your reel, load the film into the 'ears' of the reel and start slowly walking it onto the reel. This will only take a 45 seconds or so to get the film onto the reel. Once you feel the spool from the cannister hit the reel, grab your scissors and cut it off, then reel the last bit of film onto the reel.
Get your reel, place it on the center spool of the tank and then put the tank back together, making sure to put the light tight lid on. You can turn on the lights now, and that's the hard part done. Practise all this with an old roll of film in the light so you can do it down pat.
The next part is the actual developing.
Developer goes in. You agitate and wait for the certain amount of time.
Developer goes out. Water goes in. Agitate, and water goes out.
Fixer goes in. Agitate, wait for certain amount of time. Fixer goes out.
Aaaaannd you're done. Screw off the light tight lid, look at your negatives for a sec, then let the negatives sit under running water for 10 minutes or so. Hang to dry
