My recommendation is to study the kuleshov effect and Montage theory before you start focusing on shot composition and making things look pretty. Good-looking pictures that don't support the narrative might as well be bad-looking pictures.
I suggest On Directing Film by David Mamet, mostly because he doesn't go into where to put the camera at all. Instead he focuses on the plain actions that are being done and the meaning created by the juxtaposition of images.
Once you understand what to film, that's when you can start studying how to film it.
