Easily forgotten basics

I'm planning a basic course on photography and want to hear some easily forgotten theory, tips and tricks for beginners. In other words, what should beginners know that is often not taught to them for whatever reason?

Auto balance is dumb. The camera makes it automatic and if it's wrong you can always correct it afterwards

Straight verticals and horizons.
Don't just point at things, frame the space something sits in and compose it properly. This includes people.
Most important area to be in focus if you have shallow dof.
Use a good flash when inside.
