Where do you guys get prints made online?

Are there any basics I should know before ordering prints?

I've heard that prints may be darker than a properly calibrated screen and should be adjusted to be overexposed by 1/3 stop or more.

well, that's something only spouted by retards. monitors are backlit and photos are not, dumbass.

you print according to the histogram and you tell the printer not to fuck with it.

If you're exposed properly and you screen is calibrated well enough for exposure or glance at the histogram to make sure nothing's clipped (unless you want it to be) you should be fine

This isn't a great idea. I work at a photo lab and we generally know how the printer makes things look. For whatever reason it seems to print more magenta so we pull a little bit of magenta out so it ends up looking as close to what they provide

I'd hope most places that print have people that are familiar with how their printers take certain things

Also make sure you're using the proper colorspace

Personally I'd never do it online. I'd go somewhere as local as you can and try to work with them. Most places will show you examples on different paper and you can usually get at least one unpaid or at 50% redo

It's also nice because you can show them what you have and have a conversation about what you want done

isnt this why you calibrate your printer and monitor, so you dont have to go by metrics such as "generally" "a little bit of" and "as close to"?

Yes, they're both hardware calibrated but for whatever reason with some combination of inks and papers it can run more than the other

We usually calibrate for the paper we use the most and adjust accordingly for the random ones
