I've seen Fuji's firmware introduce pincushion distortion to a photograph of an A4 page, so I wouldn't be surprised if a tool such as that were fallible. For example, if a lens' distortion characteristics change depending on focusing distance but the correction algorithm doesn't account for that correctly.

I almost never correct distortions automagically.

Yeah, is the correction distort (or straighten) too much your picture, if you want to keep the vignetting (or if you pushed the exposure so far in the corners you'll get even more ISO noise by lifting the vignette), if you want to keep the chrome abs as a "vintage" feature in your picture or want to keep that 3D pop®.
