Are there any other photographers like David Dubnitskiy? His work is unbelievable to me, something I strive for. His lighting is phenomenal, his photographs tell stories.

Stop trying to rip off other peoples styles with a one-size-fits-all answer. Learn to use your camera, learn to look at and for light. There's nothing exceptional about the photo you posted. It's mostly natural light anyway.

You can also see the girl on the left's panties through her skirt, and that's trashy as hell. Instantly kills any vintage vibes the shot has and places it solidly in the past decade.

Awful work really.

Most of his photos use natural lighting yet almost all of them are impeccable, rarely achieved with natural lighting so well. And no, I'm looking for someone who knows what they are talking about instead of angrily typing at their keyboards because they don't agree with my opinion. The lighting here isn't anything out of the ordinary. It's just backlit shots with fill light. The fill could be from reflectors or softboxes.

This photo looks like there's an artificial source, softbox or whatever, behind the curtain. The light is too directional to be just diffused window light, and the lighting ratio is too low for it to be direct sunlight.

Get a couple of cheap reversible reflectors and friends or poles to hold them and practice indoors.

When you're trying to understand the lighting in a scene, study the highlights and shadows. Look where the highlights fall on the subjects, how diffuse they are, which way the shadows fall, and how diffuse those are. Look at the brightness ratios between brighter and darker areas so you can understand the relationships between the light sources used.

Direct sunlight falls off very quickly, hence the hard shadows in OP's picture. The room seems to be of decent size, so there's not a lot of reflection off the wall behind the camera. So the photographer has to use fill of some kind so that the sides of the subjects facing the camera aren't in total shadow.

(Large) scrim across the windows and a strobe(s) outside. Personally I witnessed this shown here on the bottom (it was a paid American Express photoshoot with 8 people involved. this produced like 7 usable photos lol).

Also retouched, like these sun rays shown. Russians are their apex love to instill their fine art skills into photography so don't think everything is straight out of the camera.

Ok so if you take a look at the right two photos and then his photos on the left, there's a very clear softness to his, this is achieved by using fill lights/softbox/reflectors lighting the shadow parts of the photo?

He shoots a lot of natural light in the evening/late afternoon. It also looks like he underexposes his images quite a bit then pushes them up in post while controlling the contrast to prevent that HDR effect. There are very few if any pure white values in his images. Looks like the blacks are also lifted especially in the skin. Looks like he started/still shoots a decent amount of MF film which explains why he does this with his digital stuff to make it look similar.

I'll also add that a useful workflow for this kind of editing is to use adjustment layers in Lumunosity, Color, Hue, and Saturation mode. I.e. use Luminosity curves to decrease contrast then create a gradient map with the appropriate color distribution, set it to hue or color then paint it in as necessary to minimize the pallette. His color choice and then limiting the whole image to that palette is important to the "romantic oil painting" look.

If you want to do this with softboxes get a giant octa and do not aim it straight at the model or scene, rotate it so the edge of the light cone is hitting the model then place a large white reflector on the other side to aim the fill
