For off camera flash you have a few options;
1. Hotshoe extension cable
Super easy to setup, just a wire that runs from hotshoe to foot, some will also pass ttl info so you can have automatic flash exposure
2. Ir triggers
Super cheap triggers, not the most reliable, good for a quick play and not much more
3. Radio triggers
Bit more expensive, but are usually part of a complete, expandable solution. You can get things like pocket wizards that allow you to adjust flash settings using a master controller attached to your camera.
Personally I use godox v860ii flash units as they have decent wireless triggers built in, they're powerful and affordable, have hss so you're not limited to sync speed, decent controls and a rechargeable li-ion battery with super fast charge times.
