Basic flash guide.
1. Set your bg exposure
With your flashes off, get your exposure for the bg nailed, flash isn't going to change the bg unless it's close to the subject.
2. Add your key flash
This will be the main flash to light your subject. adjust power, distance, angle and modifier to change how it looks, chimp until it looks as you want
3. Add tertiary flash
This steps not necessary, and can be repeated ad nauseam, this may be rim lighting or a fill flash to soften shadows or whatever, again, just chimp and adjust until you get the look you want.
