The Iwo Jima shot meant the photographer had to wait for a group of soldiers to raise a second flag over the island because the first had been too small to see from below. The soldiers were told that the photographer also wanted to capture the moment.
The Reichstag shot wasnt staged either really. The first russian flag went up on the roof during the night, but soldiers on the far side of the building couldnt see it, so another was raised the following day - with the photographer joining the soldiers to take a photograph.
They were not posed - but they sure as hell were planned.
