Not really new to photography itself, but I never had a DSLR before, plus I'm a poorfag and can't afford much.

Is it the D3300 a good choice for a beginner? People have said good stuff about it, and it does have that incredible 24MP sensor, which for the price is quite good, I think? Sucks that it doesn't have an articulated screen, though.

What do you think? Maybe an offering from Canon instead?

i think canons low price models are inferior to nikons in terms of specs. its really important to check what glass you want to use though.

I bought the D3300 as my starter camera in 2014 or so. Since I was a beginner, it had more than enough features for me to use and took amazing pictures. I was using it almost daily for street photography and most weeks I did a little landscape shooting too. It always did everything I wanted and did it well, and I got plenty of great images from it. It was the perfect mix of 'just easy enough for a beginner' and 'just complex enough to take great pictures'.

I'm using a D7200 now since I actually have the experience and knowledge to value the extra features and better quality, but if I was forced to only use a D3300 even now, I woudn't feel all that limited and my shots would still look great.

TLDR. I loved the D3300 as my starter, you simply can't go wrong with it

Pick one with the new AF-P(step motor) kit lens. It's a little faster and it doensn't focus hunt.

Is this dslr ok for low light photography? I want to take night city photos. I've read that good/modern sensors are important for low light photography and thus I should avoid older models. Does anybody know when the D3300 replacer comes out? Maybe it will have a new sensor.

this is true in that they'll have better performance at higher iso's, but like the other guy said, just grab a tripod and do long exposures and that's not an issue you'll have to worry about

Board traveller here. What is the best way to rent a DSLR? What is the best bang for the buck as I'm going up north in New Hampshire and want to take better quality pics than I can as I don't think my Samsung GalaxyS4 will.

I was looking at borrowlenses, but I don't know what I'm looking at/for other than a 7-day package and keeping the price under or around $80.

Better 3d tracking, GPS, wifi, intervalometer, kit lens is usually the af-p VR. Flip screen is incredibly useful for video and landscape.

Only in liveview mode.

The only things that would improve the body are bracketing, dial turning full stops at a time and vintage nikkors metering.

THIS Is what I was wondering about. An articulated screen can be useful when you want to shoot at angles you otherwise wouldn't be able to with a fixed screen, but that's pretty much it. I mean, I don't really care for the wi-fi and the other things.

Is it worth it going for it instead of the D3300?

Can any anons give their two cents?

I am in a similar spot like OP, I have been thinking about the D3300, but I would like to take photos of moving subjects like cars at a track.
Does anyone know if this camera would be decent enough to take photos of vehicles in motion? (I would be rotating my body to follow the vehicle as it goes by)

Get the D3300. I have the D3200, and it's a rock solid camera that does all I want and need - I'm a very amatuer photographer, and I love the D3200. I got a great deal on the body and both kit lenses, and it's a fun camera to take everywhere. Same sensor, same lenses.

Both are good but I'd go with the D3400, having picked up one myself the other week. It has a higher max ISO and a somewhat better color depth.

The only desirable thing (for me) the 5200 has that the 3400 doesn't is a mic jack so you can get better quality audio if you're big on shooting video and photos. If that's not important to you at all, go with the D3400

This thread is perfect for me. I picked up a D3300 with the kit lens, a case, and a couple batteries for $160. Alot of people are recommending to get the Nikon AF-S 35mm 1.8G as a prime lens over the 50mm AF-S 1.8 FX . However, I can get the 50mm one for $115 where as the 35mm will be about $140+. Should I start with the 35mm and go from there?

I bought a used d5100 the other day, the guy gave it to me together with the kit lens (18-55 VR), a simple nikkor 55-200 and a 1.4 50mm nikkor lens, all for €380. Shutter count is at almost 15000, camera and lenses all work finde. How did I do?

50mm becomes a nice portrait lens with nicer bokeh. The 35mm will just do what your kit already does with maybe a little bit of bokeh.

If you pick a 50mm other thant the G it wont AF on the d3xxx and d5xxx bodies.

Don't get a 50mm on a crop camera unless you know what you need it for. For general purpose and >>3124557 get a 35mm. The 50mm will be too zoomed in for "normal" scenes.

Even better, spend the extra money now and just get a 30mm Sigma lens (preferably used), it will be a bit wider and render better

Got mine second hand 3-4 months ago and I quite like it so far. Personally not my first DSLR, but after my D50 broke I couldn't afford the D5300.

What do you guys think about that 40 mm Nikkor macro lens? Any better options for this price? Already got an extension tube kit, but since most of the time I do macros or at least try to make macros I'd like to purchase a normal macro
