Generally I'll just try to remain inconspicuous while I take the actual shots, then approach them and ask if it's alright if I Take photos of them. Most of the people I like to snap are young women who are more than happy to take photos (though the ones I take after asking are almost always utter shit, pic related.)

However if they notice me I'll approach them to apologize and show them the photos. If they're good, they're usually OK with it, and if they're bad, I was probably going to delete them anyway. Even if I really like them if they ask me to I'll delete them there and then. (They don't have to know I can recover lost files off my SD card.)

I usually only shoot attractive people but sometimes I fall into the old cliche of shooting homeless people and/or street weirdos. I know it's been done to death, but I like this pic and had a real nice chat with the guy after I took it.

What I disagree with is assumption that I'd be angry if someone took suggestive pictures of my GF without her permission.
Photos don't hurt anyone. I'm pointing a camera at these people, not a loaded gun. The only thing a picture can damage is your ego, and if it's already that fragile it probably deserves to be broken in my opinion.

I don't think I've seen even one person get nervous while I'm taking pictures. Like seriously, even when they catch me they're kinda just like "that's weird."
There was this one old black lady who confronted me, but that was when I was shooting with my wide-angle and she only just-so-happened to be in frame. I was confused at first because I didn't even notice her there, and by the time I figured out what she was talking about she'd already gone. It was a shitty shot anyway so I deleted it.

If you ask me, it's more about the photographer than the act of taking the photos. If I was some greasy, trilby-sporting fatass I don't doubt I'd start fights by just holding up a camera. But since I'm a clean-cut, average, inconspicuous-looking dude most people don't even care I'm there.

Ran into a nice little fashion photoshoot in Astor place. These things are run by morons and they were causing a traffic glut outside a subway station. Not a huge deal, but I figured it was a nice chance to antagonize some people.

what is the deal with people thinking it is illegal to post images taken in public spaces?

you're in public, an expectation of privacy is unrealistic. people can see you and hear you, there is no reason to expect they arent recording you.

if i were to write a 1000 word description of a person i saw in public and shared it online without the subject's consent, would you think that is illegal?

why would a 1000x jpg taken in public be illegal?
