So you guys told me to get a 50mm prime for portraits and now that I've shot a little bit with it, I am wondering if you meant 50mm equivalent.

Judging by how cropped the frame feels; that would make a lot of sense

I was debating on 50mm or 35mm but ended up choosing the 35. The 50 seemed to restricting.

Thing is, I already have an 18-135 so every time I put on the 50mm, I just sort of get confused and then go back to the zoom.

I'm not even sure what it's good for if I'm shooting on an APS-C sensor.

the 50 mm is faster with better optics than your zoom at 50. it is a nice cheap portrait lens on crop. that said, 35mm is more versatile for most people

I agree that, with both shooting at 50mm, the prime is better, but I just feel that the zoom offers me way more flexibility with the framing which I'd take over the better bokeh from the 50 in some cases.

For night-time/indoor/low light shooting you really benefit from the bright aperture of the 50mm.

it is a tradeoff
the bokeh is not nearly the most important advantage, the ability to shoot in very low light or create high subject isolation is
but if you don't mind the difference, there's obviously no reason to buy the lens. most of the time professionals use fixed lenses in controlled situations where reframing isn't as important

I already own both lenses, I'm just struggling to to figure out if I misinterpreted the advice I was given.

50mm or 35mm equivalent is more versatile for sure, though you lose some reach and bokeh when compared to 85mm equivalent.

okay so you can also use a 70mm for full-body portraits. if you're outdoors and you shoot wide open it will provide better subject isolation than your zoom.
if you compare shots with your 50 mm stopped down to f/5.6 or so they will also be sharper with less distortion than shots taken with your zoom

Yea so your 50mm is the equivalent of a 75mm which must be pretty darn tight.
A 35mm lens on your 1.5x crop factor will give 53mm which is the closest you're likely to get.

You want a 35mm or 23mm for a walk around lens. Those are about a 56 and about a 35 when you talk about equivalent focal lengths. A nifty 50, which it looks like you have is a great portrait lens for a crop because it is about an 85mm equivalent.

The most popular focal lengths for a 35 mm are

24 mm
28 mm
35 mm
50 mm
85 mm
105 mm
135 mm

that's because portraiture is usually done with longer lenses (~75-90mm, in ff equivalent, is the most common rec'd focal lengths for that). you can shoot wider for portraits, of course, if that's what you want stylistically

You should see an eye doc for that tunnel vision, breh. You might have glaucoma or something. Normal human vision is almost 180 degrees, which would be less than 10mm focal lenght uwa lens on full format. And even the stereoscopic vision is quite a lot wider than a fiddy.
