This was the composition he wanted, the subject in the middle, the goal on the left edge.
But you forgot to ask yourself, "where was the camera pointed prior to this shot?".
Much further to the right, offscreen. His camera was initially framed the guy who kicked the ball.
THEN he quickly moved to frame the goalkeeper. And he got the goalkeeper in focus that fast, why?
Because as soon as the guy who kicked the ball was out of the frame, the camera began to search for a new subject. So when he moves the camera to the left, that means the Goalkeeper initially appears on the far left edge...
Do you slowly realise why the edge AF suddenly becomes important for this style of shooting?
The Goalkeeper first appears on the left edge, the camera already works on tracking him right there and then.
So by the time Fro compose the shot to have Goalkeeper in the center and the goal on the left, the camera already had plenty time to track the new subject, since it already began when he first appear on the left edge.
And the camera properly did the job. Isn't technology fantastic?
