Ive been thinking about buying a used full frame canon since ive realized most of my current lenses will already fit. Older versions come quite cheap, actually on Ebay.

Got any recomendations? So far Ive looked at the 5D mark 1, is that worth it?

It's a good camera.

Just understand its limitations in speed and low-light performance.

Use good timing, and take out a flash when it gets dark. Files do push 2.5ish stops from maximum (3200) and look about as grainy as what you'd get from Tri-X clumsily pushed 2 stops.

5DII is a substantial upgrade. Just stick with the center AF point. It's pretty more than anyone needs, unless you're shooting sports.

The 5D classic is still a very good camera.
Before buying you should control the sensor, because in past the mirror is falling down in sensor section and sometimes there are scratches which could be visible on the shootings at f4 or above.

The cam has no live view function (i think it is added on 5dII+)
And the lcd quality for previewing is very bad in comparing actual camera models.

But the pictures are high quality. Best lens for beginning is a 50mm 1.8 you can buy it from canon 120$ or the china plastic version (yongnuo) for 50$.

And you should by few new batteries.

5Dc every time. They're more reliable and predictable in behavior, have a back dial so you can control 2 exposure variables at once. They just "go" as long as you're not some kind of pixel peeping faggot.

They're not like mirrorless cameras or even some recent SLR's in that the 5D will suggest what it thinks you should do, but you can instantly decide if you want to work with it, or have it do what you want.

They're also so cheap they generally pay for themselves after 1 craigslist gig, and leave you shekels for lenses.

Performance is all about SNR, bigger sensor equals bigger signal, equals better signal to noise ratio. Full frame isn't 'slightly larger' it's OVER DOUBLE the area.

Plus, larger sensors are less demanding on lenses, meaning you get sharper pictures and longer fl's give more natural bokeh, so you get improvements from that too.

Crop cameras are flase economy toys, may as well use your phone.

A modern Rebel will take better pictures.
But a 5Dinosaur is more fun to use.

Personally I would go for the 5D if it's just a hobby. - image quality is overrated anyways.

I wonder if they still make their own machines to fabricate sensors.

That's what they did with the 5D:
Canon lithography machines using Canon optics to make Canon sensors to put in Canon bodies. - pretty cool IMO.
