For moving cars and open, spacious fields:
-Long focal length, something between 105 and 200
-F5.6 to F8, don't be a bokeh whore
-Learn how to use a cpl filter
-Learn the panning technique

For tight spaces
-Same as above for detail shots, they are pretty neat
-Ultra wide angle lens for full body shots (less than 18mm on apsc)

your camera mode is not really the problem, allthough you should really use shutter priority if the car is moving. the main problem is the boring light. the diffuse light of that overcast day creates less contrast and therefore drama. maybe wait until evening when the sun is closer to the horizon and there are less clouds and see how you can play with the lighting. also your compositions are not ideal, but this can be easily fixed: just look at some more professional car pics.

Think of it as exaggerating perspective rather than distorting.
Once you get the light right you'll need to think about your editing a bit more as well.

It will, but only looks bad if you shoot from extreme angles.

Shoot in better light.
Overcast doesn't work for cars.

Early dawn is best in my opinion.
Dusk is fine too, and usually has more color if thats what you're after.

For black cars you can get away with noon as long as it's a clear sunny day. The blue sky makes color look deeper.

CPL is a good idea because it makes reflections fuck right off.

in most cases, being further away makes cars look nicer, also try to avoid taking photos from eye level if you can, so get low or high
99% of a car photo is also your location and light imo, best times, as have been mentioned here, are just before dawn or just after sunset, for dat soft light

also, when shooting in overcast, always have a polariser handy (always have one handy for cars anyway though), cuts that ugly grey windscreen reflection you always seem to get when it's cloudy

big stripbox + bowens speedlite mount + maglite crammed into the speedlite mount

using a lightstand as a makeshift handle for the whole lot, looks ridiculous, but it can give nice looking results imo

one exposure for the car, one for the background

if you dress dark and make sure the light doesn't pick up on you or anything you're wearing, the only thing that'll show up in the first shot is the light itself

it's probably much less complicated than you seem to think it is lel

set wb to the light you're painting with, and expose for background, keeping a long exposure time

the background exposure is just to clean up the trails that the torch leaves, exposure settings are identical between shots

I should have got DOF to cover the badge, and another shot side on showing off the wheel's machine work. Alas. Check out that air inlet in front of the wheel. God knows what that's for. It's not ducted to the brakes or anything.

Small DOF is nice sometimes but you want to get the entire car in acceptable sharpness.

The biggest shame about this one is the right side of the car being out of focus. Everything else is pretty decent but then half the car is quite blurry which is a shame.

Honestly I just threw a random colour grading preset on it, there were better ones, black and white worked pretty well but I went with this one for some reason. Didn't do much otherwise.

In the attached pic the background is a beautiful landscape.

I think you should not even try to take a good car photograph if you have no control over the lighting and composition. Like at car shows or if you see a cool car parked outside. Forget about it.

trying to scope out some new spots I can shoot at night, I rather like having a bg lit by orange street lights with a nice white light on the car, I can see what you mean about the last one I posted though.

it's harder work than I ever thought it'd be to find nice locations for shooting cars at haha
