Not really. I got my xt1 and four batteries for $600 usd. Pretty great deal for the quality of the camera. If you shoot and focus in manual, there's really nothing that compares for ease and speed of operation.

I found an xe1 for $150 and it works pretty well. Great dynamic range. I have found that highlights tend to clip unevenly, so sometimes I get pink highlights.

Every brand prices their products to the maximum amount that they think they can get away with, and as long as people are willing to pay, the price is right. A retailer once told me that even at 70% discount they might make some amount of profit with some products, it wasn't a fuji dealer though. Fuji cameras are mostly "premium" devices that are somewhat expensive to make, they don't make that many cheap plastic things like what canikon push out, so naturally their launch prices reflect that.

That's 286% more expensive than the Canon lens.

Their Apodization counterpart to the Sony 100mm STF costs 1500 USD, same price as the Sony.
But with Fujifilm you don't get 100mm lens, you only get a 56mm lens, and you don't get a 2 stop Apodization filter either, you get a much weaker one.

So yes, they are not very good value, and the pricing is very high compared to the main 3 camera makers.

FF is especially gr8 with slr wides. My gorgeous OM 24/2 is just a bog standard wide on the Fuji. They are nice for Leica M lenses though, combo is smaller and there's less corner smearing thanks to crop and a thinner stack.

Try them out if you can. 56 is a bokeh monster capable of producing some interesting creative images, but is slow to focus, moving such heavy lens elements around. I personally prefer vintage lenses instead. 50 is cheapish, blazing fast focusing and record breakingly sharp, still capable of small dof when needed. I mostly take serious portraits at smaller apertures to get more in focus anyway...

All I can really say about Fuji is that I feel like I get my money's worth out of their stuff. Yeah, it's expensive, but I've been really happy with the results and I feel like nobody else quite offers what Fuji does. I switched because I wanted small, light, and fast lenses, and any other system would have meant compromising on either speed or size (Sony), going to a sensor that doesn't have the performance I wanted (m4/3) or spending waaaaaay more money (Leica).

I shoot with multiple systems (sony, leica, Fuji) out of all of them the Leica M9 is the best, Fuji Xpro 2 is close in terms of leica rendering and leica experience , sony is more computer like and doesn't fit my style of photography as well. but there are still situations I use the sony when I need FF and don't want to bring the Leica out.

if you buy into fuji the best lens line up is the 16, 23 1.4 , 35 F2, and 56

If you want to get the absolute most out of you're fuji in terms of Leica experience pick up a Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 and shoot in Classic Chrome. you will be blown away at how close the rendering is to leica. The old M sensors were designed to mimic the Kodachrome look thats what gives a leica it's characteristic look.

Fuji won't out right say it for obvious reasons but they do say that the CC is not a reproduction of a film stock more of a reproduction of a photographic style. basically meaning they designed the CC look with leica sensors in mind. go out and shoot with a M9 you will notice almost immediately that it has a very muted magical look to it straight out of the camera. it's the same thing the CC sim is trying to replicate.

12 is to wide for me even on crop.. The touit lenses in my option don't really live up to the Zeiss name. the best modern zeiss glass out there is definitely the Loxia range. I had the Touit 32 and sold it because honestly the Fuji 35 F1.4 performed better overall and had better micro contrast.

Go to lens rentals and rent each one for a weekend.
Gives you some time with them.

Maybe you will find out you NEED the low light ability of the a7ii, or maybe you will fjnd out the X-T20 is more rhan good enough.

Both are good cameras, it comes down to personal preference really.

I went with a7ii due to the fact I have a bunch of old lenses I wanted to adapt. Crop factor would have made then weird/useless.

You're an idiot if you don't think any major camera company doesn't produce accurate colours. Fuji has had more years in colour theory than any other digital camera manufacturer because of their history in manufacturing film.

If anon is worried about colour, either MFT or Fuji system would suffice - but Fuji would arguably be better.

If you want to take colours accurately (in an industrial or medical sense), you would need to use a colour checker and software no matter the make of the camera. If you're justing shooting willy-nilly then I think Fuji is great because their out of camera JPEGs are great with great skintone. Canon would also be great because they have awesome out of camera skin tones. If you're editing RAWs, it won't matter what camera you get.

No, but Konica did. And they merged with Minolta years before the Sony buyout.

Besides, film,and sensors are two very sifferent technologies. Being good at one doesn't make you good at the other. And Sony is the flat out BEST when it comes to sensor tech. There is a reason Fuji goes to Sony when they want a sensor.

Besides I doubt many of the workers from the film era, from Fuji, Minolta, or Kodak, are still working today or have any input into modern digital camera designs.

You tried shooting wide open at shutter speeds over 1/1000, goes to insta trash.

Also, it's not sharp at the edges at all until about f4.

If you're gonna have a fixed lens camera, it has to be a perfect lens & sensor combo, hence why sony use a curved sensor with their high end point n shoots.

I've owned several of them (X100, XPRO-1, XPRO-2, XT-10) A few years ago I started shooting with the X-100 just to try it out because I come from a leica rangefinder background (film M3, M6) and my current digital body at the time was a Canon 6D. I loved the Digital workflow but the user experience just wasn't there for me..

I started looking into Sony's before ultimately settling on a X100 knowing it would give me the experience I was looking for because I mainly shot with a 35 on my old leica body's..

Definitely a fun camera and more of what I was looking for but it had some major quirks. months later I jumped into the XPRO-1 great camera and a HUGE bargain as of right now. At this point I fell in love with the Fuji system and soon added a used XT-10 though the system was quirky and AF was shit I learned to live with it.

now we come to the X-PRO 2 and honestly Fuji has really stepped up with the new line of stuff out there. the X-PRO 2 is a beast it has never let me down. it's the closest to that leica rangefinder feel I have found yet. other then spending big bucks on a Digital M. I recently picked up a Leica Q for a deal I couldn’t pass up. and honestly I prefer the shit coming out of the XPRO-2 over the Q. I feel like the Q and the X100 line would be a better comparison. but If I had a X100 F I know that I would prefer it over the Q

I really feel that Fuji is the one company out there right now that has done everything right. maybe there only fault is not making a X-PRO FF line to directly compete with Leica.

I feel that Sony is always one step ahead but two steps behind when it comes to reliability and customer support. they could be amazing but they just need to work out the shit thats wrong with there current lines before pushing out more with the same continues issues.

Canon is the king of the DSLR market but if they want to stay in the game it's time for them to start thinking about mirrorless FF and taking it seriously before nikon pushes out something and leaves them in the dark

Ok guys, I have a dilemma. I can pretty much sidegrade my pleb-ass X-A2 to an X-E2 for free if I sell the former one. I get the much more familiar SLR-like controls and the EVF but lose the tilt screen which is pretty comfy for hip shooting. I know, the point is, I don't know if I should grab what I have at hand now or wait some weeks after the X-E3 releases and the second hand market sees an influx of X-E2(S). I also have the chance to spend just a little bit more (like 150€ more) and get an X-Pro1 for that sweet optical viewfinder but I'm afraid it might be too dated already and left out of the firmware upgrade game beyond support for new lenses.

Oh well, I'll see if I can sell the X-A2 first for a good price, it's not like I'm using it much since I also have my film cameras around.

So Keh wound up accidentally sending me an x100t, guy on the phone said it must have been mislabeled in the warehouse

Only problem is the focus error in AF mode. He said i could send it back and exchange for a black x100s, full refund, or buy something else

Was $800 on KEH soo ive been diddlig with mf and focus peaking and im surprised how fast im able to focus that way. I agree wide open the lens is pretty soft, but so far im really enjoying it

Nope i called fuji customer service and thats the first thing they asked too. Sometimes, not all the time, the af motor will get loud then front and back focus and "focus error" will come up on the screen and you have to off/on to reset. Manual focus is fine though. A quick google search shows its a known issue

Then again just looking at pure value though, then yeah. You can get a used Nikon D7100 and a few pretty good lenses for a grand, whereas a similar fuji setup would cost many times that. I own one and it's definitely FBW. It simulates a mechanical focus ring, but it still uses digital signals and motors to do it, not linkages and helicoids. If you have it, just try turning the ring while the lens is off the camera and you'll see that nothing moves inside the lens, and the way the ring switches from AF to MF wouldn't work with a mechanical system anyway. (You'd have to have an infinite ring with a slip clutch like Nikon or Canon ultrasonics or a focus ring that spins when AF is active like Nikon screw-drive lenses.)

That said, it's academic because the user experience is pretty much indistinguishable from a real focus ring.

Not mirrorless though. Even the new 90mm macro is still technically FBW but just done to emulate traditional manual focusing (DoF scale, hard stops). Realistically, that's all a FBW lens needs to be like "normal" lenses.

Every AF-capable mirrorless lens is focus by wire. They may have hard stops and DoF scales but those are implemented in the firmware to emulate truly manual lenses.

That is actually the way to do it. The push/pull ring for manual/auto selection is really nice.

But these uncoupled focus by wire lenses with a full one second lag time and acceleration are just trash.

Basically any older brands that somewhat made it into the digital era but also not really - pentax, olympus, minolta, yashica, mamiya

Canon FD and Nikon are pretty overpriced

for a smaller profile look into m39 or other rangefinder lenses. Since they were designed for cameras without flipping mirrors, they could sit closer to the shutter, and be smaller

Nah, quite a few FBW lenses have DoF scales, the lens tracks focus ring position and then tells the motors where to move the glass.

The easiest way to check if a lens is FBW is to take it off the camera, turn the focus ring, and see if the glass moves. >>3158816 is generally right though, the only non-FBW mirrorless lenses I know of are manual focus-only.

Not really all that much more than x-mount. And you are getting a hell of a lot more camera for the price, too.

I'd honestly wait until the a7iii in November. a7rii is nice and all, but the a7iii will have the huge Z-type battery, and improved a9 controls/menus.

I easily get 600 shots off one battery.
You don't need that many as a walkaround camera and a backup battery is the lightest and smallest on the market.

idk man, of course i seriously considered a mirrorless camera, but idk, photography just makes more sense with a DSLR, i think. also mirrorless cameras feel too electronic, feels like it's gonna break anytime and there's nothing i could do because it's fully electronic.

In what way? An evf gives you so much more information over an ovf it is unbelievable. Plus the shorter flange distance means they can adapt anything (and autofocus most).

A DSLR is the dame way. A mirrorless has less moving parts and is a simpler device overall. A DSLR has more to go wrong on it.

The dslr is much easier to break, internally both are identical, except the dslr has a spring loaded, very lightweight, very fragile mirror assembly that is critical for af to work correctly. It also has a focussing screen that also can get knocked out of calibration and be easily damaged. It's also larger, so more cumbersome and will get knocked around more and they weigh more so have more momentum when knocked around. It's the difference between a piano and a keyboard, except they both sound identical.

Mirrorless also show an exact preview of the image you're shooting, instead of a guesstimate, you wouldn't learn to play songs on an acoustic guitar if all your sound has to come from moving coil pickups. It's going to sound completely different.
