Macro can be cool sometimes. Of course when your main focus is on one subject up close it leaves less to work with. Macro images can impress people who don't know shit about photography like your mom or potential clients for whatever. (Photographing menu items or whatever banal bullshit [good for freelance photographers with no work and need shit for their portfolio or a couple bucks])
