Composition is vastly overrated, and even less understood. It should the way you arrange the elements of a scene, not which intersection of thirds you put the horizon on. If you have no elements, you have no scene, and you have no composition.

What are the elements of your first photo? Your second has a bench, but is that enough? Is there any possible way that you could compose a bench in a way that would be compelling?

also, it helps to just start paying attention to it in all the media you consume. pause movies and ask yourself "why did they do this shot this way?" ask yourself that about paintings, adverts, eventually you'll "get it"
