I shoot portraits, so it forces me to work with all kinds of people I'd wouldn't work with otherwise. I get to face new situations constantly, I progress, I get some shots I feel good about and I get some approval from it.

I've always really enjoyed going on walks in my spare time; getting to explore your city and find new places is fun. I watch a lot of movies and am fascinated by cinematographies ability to tell the story.

Couple that with my dad giving me his old DSLR when i was 18 and here I am.

It's really satisfying to set a challenge for myself and actually accomplish my goal. I'm not a great photographer, but I enjoy learning.

Three or four years ago I had to take an art credit to graduate high school, despite my already fulfilling it abroad. I settled for a basics class in Apple Valley, and mind you, this did not involve photography in the slightest. Tie-dying is one of two memorable things in that class, the other being her.

Cutest of all the creation with a touch of awkwardness that you can't but love, she was an amateur photographer. I would be sitting at my table with my assigned group absorbed in my decorative refrigerator magnets, and she would excitedly come up to me and show me all the recent pictures she took with her camera - and I never asked for them. We would sit and discuss what they meant to her, about why she doesn't like taking pictures of herself, and she can talk about gear incessantly and I will listen - because she had astounding sincerity for her love of photography.

Time to time I would come early to class to finish my artwork, and she would hover around until I notice, and we would talk about the future. But when we finish, she fixed her eyes on me and made the brightest smile. I owe it to her for instilling an appreciation of photography in me, and I routinely come to /p/ to enjoy people's work.

I was a senior and she a junior or sophomore, and I was only there for a trimester. I don't even remember her name, and her image is starting to slip me.

Sometimes I think I don't deserve happiness, because it smacks me dead in the middle and I'm too blind to take it on. At that time I was deeply religious - on the verge of leaving religion, so relationships were forbidden. I'd give a lot to have another conversation with her.

So yeah.

It started out with a long distance girlfriend, and wanting to be able to have pictures to remember her boy (i.e., jack it to) when we were apart.

Eventually, I bought a slightly nicer camera for this purpose, and decided that I should justify my super expensive (~$200) purchase by actually learning photography. So I read a lot and took a lot of pictures and bought a better camera and took more pictures and bought my first SLR and loved it and it made me decide to buy a DSLR and then a better DSLR and then an older but higher end DSLR and then a really fucking nice and expensive high-end DSLR and countless other digitals and film cameras and TLRs and rangefinders and a Lytro and so forth.

Somewhere along that road, I discovered that I could make friends by taking good pictures of them and hiding behind a camera let me interact even though I'm an introvert who's uncomfortable interacting with people. And I started doing a picture-a-day project for a year and kept going into the second year, and kept going after *that*, and eventually just got to the point where I have a photographic memory in the sense that I don't remember anything unless I take a picture of it.

It's kind of my life now.

I find it a fun and rewarding hobby. You can put as much time into it as you want, but there's also just the random factor of being in the right place at the right time where any idiot could get a fantastic photo. It also lets me look back on older memories and preserve them. I do a lot of stuff outdoors-- there are a lot of really beautiful mountain hikes here, and I spend a good hunk of my weekend time climbing mountains in spring summer / hiking year round / snowboarding in the winter. There's a lot of really beautiful stuff to see out in nature, and I love getting a good nature picture.

I plan on keeping my library my whole life, it'll be cool to look back in the future on the cool places I've been and the fun stuff I've done.

It's also something to get continuously better at, something to sometimes fail at and still be able to learn from without really fucking myself over.
Also I thoroughly enjoy making art that people like even if it's only a few people

I bought a DSLR for a trip once but only shot in P mode. Since I already had it, I went to /p/, read the sticky and got gud.

These days, photography is pretty much my number 1 reason to travel so I stuck with it

It started 2 years ago. Second year at art college and i had this photography class. Back than i used to be quite an elitist, thinking that photography and anything digital isn't really art. Anyway...at the end of the semester i submit my shitty snapshits and turned out they were the best in class.

After that i had a period of learning photography and got myself a d3300. I was trying to capture the best images i could...but something felt wrong...i just...i wasn't happy or fulfilled.

Now i use m42 lens. Can't focus properly or at all to infinity. I underexpose because i love the darker colors. I use a shitty rangefinder with fuji c200 film. I never edit my photos and i rarely shoot raw.

Right now I'm decent at photography but I just want to have fun and capture compositions and not just images.

I used to skate a lot as a kid, and fell off as I got older. Skating and photography are pretty deeply connected, and when you start to shoot in the streets you're applying a lot of the same perspectives in a different way, just hunting for subjects and good light instead of ledges or whatever other kind of skate spot.

Found an old nikon fe2 for super cheap at a secondhand store with a nice lens and case so I got it. Took me a bit to figure it out but when I did the pictures turned out great, and bitches loved them.

Also because in high school there would usually be some hipster girl hanging around taking pictures of people on her shitty dslr but it was always nice to look back on them later, so I wanted to be the one to document it

I like the concept of photographing the everyday stuff and making something out of it. I've found myself thorougly liking a lot of shots people take which is just of a street, or a room, or something else. But in a still picture, where you can examine all the little details, you get sort of a nostalgic feeling. I like that.

I just love animals, so wildlife photography just works for me. Like other anon, aside from gym 3 times a week I don't get out much so that helps too.

Plus, there's kind of an adrenaline rush aspect when I photograph things like a momma grizzly with two cubs.

Got an Illum when they got down to ~$300ish. I've done maybe three or four shoots with it. Lytro recently announced they're taking down the website that's the only way to share Lytro photos. So, good use of my money there. Thanks, Lytro.

It lets me combine interests by visually documenting things that I'm interested in.

Provides challenges with changing light/situations and in search of that "shot" I can have a lot of fun.

I used to draw a lot and the stuff I photograph now is what I used to draw. Part of me wants to get back into drawing and git gud, but we'll see.

I've always been one of those 'creative' types that have a constant urge to create things. I used to be into drawing as a kid, but I didn't have the talent for it. I was super into music as a teenager, but was always frustrated by my inability to find other musicians to work with. Your drummer decides to blow off practice and your whole day is pretty much ruined. So I gave up on any hobby where I had to rely on other people. Found photography and never looked back.

Honestly, it has, in my 23 years, offered me the only opportunity, so far, to be in the same room as a naked female.
Started out when a buddies girlfriend wanted to take some artistic nudes for him for his birthday.
I am the only person in my circle of friends who had a "real" camera.
So she asked me and jumped, she is pretty fat, but nude is nude.
They turned out pretty good and she told a friend and word got around.
I make almost as much on my nude photo side job as my real job.
I were a jock and three pair of underpants when I am shooting, get erections like crazy and occasionally ejaculate.
I really love my side gig.

It is, and you can definitely export as a JPEG. But if you do that, it's pretty much just a shitty low-resolution still camera instead of an awesome light-field camera. The thing that makes it unique is that you can post semi-3D pictures where you can adjust your plane of focus to kind of move through the scene. When you flatten it, it takes all of what's interesting about that and turns it into a roughly cellphone-quality JPEG.
