How many photos do you take a in a normal session /p/?

Is taking 20+ photos of the same subject (in landscape photography) too many? I like to try different angles and exposures, so there's the highest chance of getting a "good" shot, but then it takes forever to weed out the pointless ones in post.

Or should I just shoot film to force myself to get the proper composition from the beginning

Take as many as you need to get the good one. The more you do it, the fewer you'll need.

Are you using Lightroom? Pretty easy to zip through photos in Lightroom.

Are you literally take the same picture 20+ times OP? That's stupid and pointless. Pay attention while shooting. If I'm shooting landscapes and find a scene like I'll inspect the elements. If I like everything as is I'll fire a frame. If I want some clouds to move, or the light to change, I'll wait. No point in shooting 15 pictures between arriving and waiting for the elements to fall into place if you know exactly what you want.

For landscape I take one exposure of a scene then move along, unless I want to shoot something else in the scene from a different angle.
For everything else, if it's moving I'll do 2-3 if it's still, take one and get out.

I have a "vague" idea of what I want it to look like, but not good enough to be like those people who can instantly visualize the final product and manage to line things up on the first shot

The process of choosing the best shot from 20+ random shots is the exact same as choosing the framing/composition in your mind/from the viewfinder before clicking the shutter button.
In fact that way you have infinite amount of possible shots you can choose from

I typically take one shot when I get to an area and adjust exposure. Then for shots of people I might take 3 in a second or probably quicker just to make sure their eyes are open and all. But generally I'm shooting for work and the bosses want me to get at least a decent shot of each person/scene/activity.
Having said that, I do the same when I'm shooting for fun as well. Maybe even more than three in low light or a very small DOF

Jesus Christ, /p/, the number of people giving the advice “take fewer pictures to get better at taking pictures” in this thread is really disheartening.

Taking fewer pictures is not how to take better pictures. Taking fewer pictures (or, more accurately, increasing the percentage of keepers you get when taking pictures) is a goal, not a practice strategy. You have to take a lot of shitty pictures to get into the habit of picking the best one(s) out of 20 photos of uneven quality, and THEN you get to the point where you can just take the one that you’ll know is good instead of taking 19 mediocre and one good.

How I see this is that, thinking and checking shit out before taking the picture results in better photos overall and in consequence, less photos taken. In contrast to just taking a billion bad photos. Of course to get there you have to take a lot of photos and learn from that.

Depending how long you have been shooting, this could be acceptable or unacceptable and simply a crutch. Trying different angles is okay, but you don't have to take a picture of each iteration. I try different angles, but won't snap a picture 90% of the time.

In terms of trying different exposures, unless you are pretty new you should know what exposure (or two) works best. If you aren't new, you're simply chimping which is counterproductive to getting better and simply a bad habit. If you aren't new, spending more time looking at your camera and less time looking at the scene, possible compositions, and quality of light isn't a good thing.

That's all good. Like I mentioned, trying different angles is fine. Taking a photo of each version isn't. Being able to tell in-camera if a composition works is a good skill to develop. I'm not saying you shouldn't have multiple versions on your card by the time you get home...having a few is okay. Having 10 isn't. Whatever iterations you do have, review them and decide why some work and why some don't. By doing this and being critical of your work, you should eventually decrease the amount of actual shutter presses you make in an outing. Again, this all depends how new you are. The newer you are, the more acceptable shooting numerous iterations is. Just make sure you're reviewing all the photos afterwards and making judgments as to why some work better than others.

Yeah, but it took me quite awhile to get comfortable doing that. A multi-day hike usually results in <50 photos taken. I'm a filmfag though, so there are reasons for being this frugal.

I shoot very minimally, and get comments on this when shooting festivals. I'll only ever do continuous high-speed shooting when something like a pyro hit is going to happen.

At one event recently another photog was only out an hour and the mad bastard managed to fill two 256gb SD cards. I can't imagine shooting that much.

My photos get used a lot though so I'm guessing my approach works.

For numbers - if a DJ is playing say a two hour set, I might get 50 photos at most, not including burst shots for pyro hits/stage jumps/etc. I'll narrow that down to about 20 edits. There's only so much you can shoot on one stage before you're essentially just getting the same images. Some from the stage, some from the pit, some from the FOH desk, done.

I'll shoot about the same amount for each DJ, about 30 or so of people in the crowd, and 10 or so general atmosphere, maybe five outside the venue (entrance, poster, queue, etc).

If I'm doing a landscape shot, I'll probably take about two shots of the same scene with the same composition at most, normally just one.

I'm thinking about purposely only carrying a 1gb SD to limit myself to a few total shots, as an exercise to properly establish a composition before shoting

That's a meme. Sometimes pro photographers dedicated an entire roll to just one subject. There is nothing wrong with taking several photos from different angles. It's just that it will slow you down if you do it with every subject. You have to know for yourself is a subject is special enough.

You should know how you want to capture something before you release the shutter. Photography is a creative pursuit and as such most of your work is the thought that comes before hand, and not the setting and firing of the camera

yeah I really don't give a shit outside of honing my craft because unlimited hard drive space is cool in a digital age and longer editing times is only an issue if I have a crazy deadline

also since we're talking shutters, I bought my 5DM2 at like.... 60k? it's at 105k now. I shoot on a 1DX with 200k now and I've probably only put about 10k on it so far. it'll last awhile and I got it for a fucking steal ($1700)

It's part of a longer process of improvement broski.

Getting in the habit of being able to see the composition in the camera is the step before being able to see the composition without even raising your camera to your face. That's the mode that will start saving you time.

Poor here.
My primary camera is a used Nexus 4.
Got it for $1 at the flea market.
The phone calling part doesn't work.
I average 200 pictures on my lunch break.
I work on remote road projects so I get to go to lots of different places.
Around 100-150 before and again after work.
I am trying to develop my "eye" for photography.
Since it is a camera phone no worries about a shutter.
I tell my co-workers I am a landscape and nature "street style" photographer.
So far I like the results.
Never going to be a pro, just a hobby.
Get plenty of exercise from all my wanderings.
I tend to shoot a bit wider than I I have read is the norm.
I like being able to crop the image to suit my vision once I load them into my tablet.
Saving up for a "real" camera, but so far, so good.

Saving almost everything I make so I can buy a couple of hundred acres and become more or less self sufficient.
Instead of staying in a motel and having to drive 50-75 miles to and from the jobsites, I live in my camper and sometimes sleep out in my tent.
Eat better making my meals instead of eating in restaurants like my co-workers.
If I stay on site on the weekend the company owner pays me cash to be onsite security.
I use the cash payments to live on, my paychecks all go toward investing.
Will I live like a nearly homeless person forever, nope. But at my age 23, I can do this for a while.
Helps to make you realize what you really need to live and what is just nonsense.
Except for food and fuel I don't think I own anything that wasn't purchased used.

Experience with lots of practice. Granted what >>3157947 said is semi valid in that it makes you think before you shoot more.
I shoot digital now, but came from the days when you took notes on shots to learn what worked, and what did not. I still do not just randomly trip the shutter, if I don't see a shot, I don't take it. The only time I take multiple shots is to get wide dynamic range, or for!focus stacking. No need otherwise.
