Why does HDR looks so fake even when it's tastefully done?
HDR fags claim that it's closer to what our eyes see. Our eyes, that supposedly have great dynamic range, don't ever see the world like in these abominations

You're confusing tonemapping for HDR. Eyes have a naturally wide dynamic range, but tonemapping and the default "convert to HDR" option on photoshop crank up the sharpness, saturation, contrast, and clarity. It's also why you see the halos on hard edges.

Didn't actually, the top pic is jpeg out of the camera and the bottom is what I could recover from the raw. Agreed on a lil overbaked, those red blueberry bushes really were bright irl though.

From early impressions I've heard the d850 has crazy DR, especially when you shoot iso64. I could see 'HDR' in the future being single shots from sensors with a wide natural DR, rather than a composite of multiple shots. I've tried multi-shot composites in the past and they almost always end up looking like ass.

pic related from 7 years ago when I had even less of a clue. Think it was 3 exposures. I think if I had been more careful with my editing it would've turned out better, a lot of bad HDR definitely comes from people not knowing wtf they're doing.

yeah it's a d750, but I feel like we're heading towards HDR being just a wide dynamic range from one image rather than composites. It's certainly helped me out a lot when recovering shots.

It doesn’t. When it’s tastefully done, you don’t realize it’s HDR. What you’re seeing is really shitty HDR and mildly shitty HDR.

Can anybody explain why would I ever need to take multiple exposures of something, when I can just raise my shadows and/or reduce highlights since I shoot RAW? And what is the difference between that and shooting with an HDR mode?

Until recently sensors didn't have the capability to recover this much in post. I was shooting with a d90 for years and the amount I could fix in post was absolutely minimal. If you wanted HDR you'd need multiple exposures.

Because things don't glow like that in real life. What you're looking at is tone mapping, it's a side effect of many of the Photoshop plugins for HDR. HDR itself is simply "high dynamic range" and most people who post an image shot on a camera/film with a good amount of dynamic range won't bother to point it out or call it an "HDR photo".

Night photography is different, You have to do very different exposures for the foreground and the background to have sharp and clean landscape and detailed sky without trailing stars.
That is not HDR, that is simply nightscape photography.

How is that not HDR? HDR means "high dynamic range". A photograph with "high dynamic range" has good detail range between shadow and highlight areas even if the scene has a lot of exposure differences.

Because there's only so much you can reduce your highlights and raise your shadows by. Eventually, the highlights clip and the shadows drop into meaningless noise.

If you're doing it in one exposure, it's not HDR, it's just DR. I.e., it's your camera's normal dynamic range, not High Dynamic Range.

The exposures are too different. It is closer to traditional multi-exposure stacking than high dynamic range stacking.
In HDR you are stacking 0.5-1.5 EV difference exposures. In nightscapes you are stacking different ISO, very different shutter speed, you let things blur in one and then raise ISO to have sharp stars while leaving the foreground smudged and noisy. You also put focus on the landscape in one shot then on the stars in the other. Very different takes. HDR you just set the bracketing and fire away 2-3-5 shots with small difference in exposure.
