Does anybody else use nothing but a 50mm equivalent lens? I shoot mainly street scenes but I never find it too tight unless I'm taking photos of the inside of a church or in a busy market.
I was thinking of buying a 35mm equiv just for travel as I'm going to Barcelona and will literally be shooting inside churches...

When I'm not sure what to use for a carry piece I bring a 50 1.4 AF-D, sometimes a 35/2 or I'll put caps on the 35 and put it in my pocket

Get a 28mm, it is just wide enough to give interiors a real sense of scale. 35 is too close to 50, but great as a single lens.

I find 35mm too wide for most of my everyday shooting but great when I'm travelling to get a cityscape. I have never felt that 35mm isn't wide enough.

My usual lenses are a 50mm, a 24-70mm (OSS) and a 100mm equivalents.
Three lenses for everything. I end up using the 50mm most of them all, sometimes going days weithout swapping and getting all the shots I need

I find the 50 limiting when using on my SLR for street photography. I would prefer a 28 if I would buy another lens. I like the bokeh of the 50 if needed tho.

40mm and 50mm used to be my go to lenses, but I find myself using 28mm more than anything else now. Live in Japan, and lots of places are a little to cramped for a 50.

A lot of good focal lengths are awkward when cropped.

Good zoom lenses (rare though they are) instended for fullframe are pretty much useless on a crop.

There's a common misconception that it's because it's the same focal length or full-frame equivalent field of view of the human eye. In fact the eye's primary (non-peripheral) field of view is closer to 20mm equivalent.

A 'normal' focal length is one approximately equal to the diagonal of the sensor. For 35mm this is 45mm which used to be considered the 'normal' focal length before 50mm became more popular for some reason (probably just because it's a rounder number). This nomenclature exists pretty much because the resultant field of view is a nice enough balance between wide-angle and telephoto for it to be included on cameras as standard, which it was up until smartphones made it 28mm.

It's not really wide or tele, and it's easy to produce for 35mm format, thus cheap and available which makes it popular and so people got used to it. Nothing more. "Normal" 50mm can in reality be anything from 40mm to 60mm, depending on the manufacturer.

Well, that's not 100% true. I use 50mm exclusively on all my film camera, but I keep a 28-300 on my digital camera. If I'm going to make the effort to lug around a big expensive camera, I might as well keep a big expensive lens on it.

If you're using a cheap 28-300, the quality is pretty bad. I got a Tamron one for like $100 on eBay and I don't like it.

My Nikon one costs 10x, but is better than ten times the quality. I admit it has its flaws, but I wouldn't call it shit.

Plus, I love carrying only one lens. Do you really want to be the guy who changes lenses at a party?
