Should I "graduate" to a DSLR?
I'm tired of being unable to set shutter speed, ISO, aperture and focus manually.
Or am I too shit and it would be useless to get a DSLR?

I can get a used DSLR for less than an iPhone though. I'm thinking Nikon D3100, D40X or maybe some Canon. I missed a great deal the other day on a Pentax K-r, 150 bucks. Still kicking myself in the balls for it.

Because I couldn't get a Jolla and a BB was the closest thing. I hate Android, used to be a Nokia guy. It can take some neat pics sometimes though.

some old dslrs will have issues with night shooting unless you have a tripod or use flash. my max is iso 800 for decent colored pics at night or indoors. just save up and buy a decent mirrorless like a meme sonygger a6000 desu.

Canon Rebel 650D w/ kit lens used. Should be $200-$300 used. Can take RAW and can take 1080p video also. The newest in the line is the 800D for ~$800, but there should be no need to go that far yet unless you want the better dual pixel autofocus during video.

Or a PowerShot G9 X , if you just want a compact. $400 new. With compacts you always spend more and get less in return, besides the small size.

650D comes with better autofocus, better kit lens, easier to use button controls, rotating touch screen with tap to focus option, higher possible ISO, constant video autofocus. Besides some things I forgot, you can also install Magic Lantern which would give you access to some more features on the 650D.

The biggest thing the D3200 has over the 650D is the sensor. Which is not only 6megapixels more but it has better dynamic range, better signal to noise images, and better color sensitivity. The better senor is the feature on the D3200, and is were Nikon invested most of there resources intp. .

Both these cameras with kit lens have been going for around $300 on ebay (used condition).

Seems you've spent far too much time reading /p/ rather than actually thinking about why you want to be a photographer. What's your aim? What do you plan to achieve?

If you're a professional photographer, a huge portion of that is your equipment. Otherwise why would pros have such expensive gear? Try shooting a football match, or an F1 race, or a nightclub, or a music festival, with a phone camera or a crappy point-and-shoot.

Equipment cannot make up for a lack of skill, but poor equipment can massively hamper being able to show your skill off.

2 reasons: image and durability. Pro-rated cameras have warranties that cover pro use.
The question is how much is enough and how much is too much. I'd like to get a 5DII eventually because it's full frame and has nice video capabilities, but right now I'm looking at what stuff I can afford and justify, Getting a used D5100 is tempting right now.

My D5200 is stunning for video. No idea why, and most assume they didn't do it on purpose, but the sensor makes it better than a 5DMk3 - no moire, no AA, no rolling shutter, full uncompressed video output.

For photos too, it's great in daylight even with the crappy 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. In that sort of scenario not miles different from my D750.

But when you're in a club or at a festival, and its dark, and you need good noise performance and a very wide angle, it's a world apart. The D5200 is barely usable in comparison.

long term i'm looking for a fuji xt20 or xt2, but right now mostly film. my friend gave me a compact film and it's been really fun to shoot (nice to always have in your pocket).

Cool senpai. I'm also enjoying a Nikon FM2n slr right now. It's quite bulky tho. The tonality and organic nature of film is really nice. It is actually making me want to buy a smaller rangefinder or zone focus camera like the Rollei 35 or Bessa.

Kek. Yeah, color sucks in low light. In daylight, I also usually set my exposure compensation to -0.3 or -0.7 since I've noticed my D80 overexposes in the highlights.

It's the first sign of an amateur. It doesn't need to be level if it doesn't detract from the image, but if the horizon is an essential part of the image, it should be level. Just like in any photo that has a strong or "dominating" vertical or horizontal line. If you take a photo of some buildings and none of the lines are exact, the image just feels wrong.

Having the dominating lines intentionally crooked (dutch angle) can be used to convey different things depending on the situation, but you have to know what you're doing to make it work.
