Read up on the exposure triangle and understand what ISO, shutter speed and aperture is and how they affect eachother.
The thing about the 18-55mm you have right now is that it's a jack-of-all lens. Use it and try to figure out what focal length you usually shoot at. Do you always shoot @55mm like the kitty-pic, or do you mainly shoot wide? Maybe you prefer something around 24mm.
After a while you will know what you miss in your gear, and you can start looking for lenses.
Generally speaking all brands have good and bad lenses. Sigma as an example make utter dogshit crap like the 70-300mm or whatever, as well as good glass like the 18-35mm.
The gear thread is a good place to ask for advice when you know what kind of lens you want.
18-55mm means its focal length spans from 18mm on the wide side all the way up to 55mm on the narrow end(tele, "zoom").
The f-number indicates the maximum aperture of the lens. When there's two numbers it means its a variable aperture lens, where on your lens it means at 18mm the maximum aperture(lower number = lets more light in = more expensive) is f/3,5. If you zoom in and shoot at 55mm the maximum aperture is f/5,6.
This information is (almost) always listed on the front of the lens.
