when you switch from film to digital, you need to learn post-processing to make anything look halfway decent. this is something they didn't need to do in film. it makes sense that their stuff would look bland immediately after switching. post-processing is really an art unto itself. no everyone gets good at it.

Don't you have to post-process the film after scanning? I assume professionals don't just use the auto-settings.

The post-processing you do on a film scan vs a digital raw file are different. When I scan color film, I'm mostly concerned with getting the colors correct after inverting. If I scan BW I really don't do anything to it. And if I send it off to a fujifilm lab, I don't do anything to the images. Though I haven't tried other labs, may be different in that case.
