Or you could get as close as possible in the camera to begin with and then brush it up in post instead of flat out relying on post to save your ass

Personally I just leave my white balance on auto all the time, because having to choose between just a few settings is never going to be accurate to what it should be, and is literally no different from adjusting it in post. Setting an in camera white balance and then adjusting it later is actually more adjustment than just doing it in post only.

As for the actual thread topic: I shot JPEG instead of RAW for far too long because I believed Ken Rockwell. I got better, though (and 99% of why I decided to start shooting raw was white balance)

The only benefit I see from setting white balance to something specific while shooting is just motivation for taking a photo. Auto white balance makes things look pretty bland, and might keep me from taking a shot because it doesn't look interesting. I usually keep my WB on sunlight so theres at least SOME character to the image while I'm taking it.

OP here, I should've probably pointed out from the start that I'm using an A6000, so that's why I'm being so spastic about the white balance, because I don't have the optical viewfinder. But even back when I started shooting with a D3200 I didn't realize how important it was to fix the white balance in post.

I mean the majority of people on /p/ probably use AF point auto selection.

I've noticed it comes up in discussions on AF all the time as if ability to get the correct AF point is the single most important thing.

Well a good example would be last year when I went to Yosemite during the winter. On auto white balance, it corrected the WB and made all the snow completely white, but on daylight balance it turned the scenes more blue.

Or if you're under a canopy of leaves casting greenish light down to where you are, the auto white balance will take that color out and make it lose that light, vs having it on daylight balance, you would see that cool green cast. Obviously this is correctable in post, but in live view, or even looking at your photos after you take them, it will just make them look more bland than they do in person.

And at night I use tungsten white balance, not that you care, just my observation.

it's pretty important but it really just depends on what you're shooting.

trusting your camera to focus on the eye while doing portraits is silly when it literally takes less than two seconds to select it yourself

but at the same time it really isn't THAT necessary if you're shooting at like f/5.6. do you really gotta focus on the homeless man's eye when you're nervously doing street photography? probably not
