Meaningful photography (and art in general)

How can we make our photos more interesting? How can they convey a stronger story? Where can good subjects be found?

Is the usual "live more, travel more, experience more" really the only answer?

I find it somewhat hard to figure out when something is really interesting and when it is not. I'm not sure if I have a feeling for that. I'm never sure what is the story behind the work I create.

Well, you can measure it objectively in some degree, of course. Interesting to general population. Personally, I'm not satisfied with only "pretty pictures". Anyone can do that, and sites like Instagram are full of it. But rarely does someone stand out from the rest of the crowd.

my impression is that you want some acknowledgment or people to have some emotional reaction to whatever you shoot, but imo it's backwards to do things like that

if you want to pander to the general population then by default you need to do something as accessible as possible, but sounds like that's not what you want
you won't get whatever you want form instagram due to its very nature; it's like trying to be special and cool on tindr or social media in general, the whole point of it is that it's easy and overly accessible

I'd advise first trying to find meaning in your own pictures yourself, look at pictures you took a year ago and see if you feel smth
if you do and they have some meaning to you, a small number of people might resonate in the same way

it is an immensely personal thing you ask, and the way you ask it makes it sound like you want a few quick videos on it, and just by that fact it seems to me like either you don't get it or you don't _really_ know what you want

Take photos of interesting things and then add captions or actual paragraphs of descriptions to add context to the photo. The whole idea of "photos should stand on their own merit" is a crock of shit.

more interesting how, and to whom?
are you looking along the lines of culturally significant images, or just photos with more interesting subjects?
You can make a photo more interesting by using different exposures.
Maybe not the best example, but I like this image a lot. It would be pretty boring with a different exposure, the dark scene and cloud detail looks more interesting the way it was shot.

and some things are just chance occurrences.
This bald eagle flew above me, and my AF was set to the central point w/ tracking, and my exposure was locked to the central point (manual with auto ISO). as i'm tracking the bird, i pull the camera just a bit past it, and the camera changes the exposure for the sky.
I think the photo is cool, and i don't think the rest in the sequence which were exposed properly, are as nice, and certainly not as striking

So do good art galleries. And if they don't then they at least have a theme that connects the photos. The viewer has some idea of what to expect going in.

Without context great photos can be meaningless. Example: this capture of Barack Obama delivering his 17th speech while in office relating to mass shootings. Without understanding the moment it was captured it's just another photo among many of Obama crying.

Photography is more than art galleries and photobooks anyway.
