I was thinking the other day, would still product photography work with a moving background? Like if you moved a camera on a rail, and the product moved with the camera, could you get a motion blurred bokeh background with an in focus subject?

What would that even look like?

Interesting. I think the background would have motion blur since you're moving with the subject, but it is an interesting thought.
Perhaps, if the shutter speed were lowered a tad, you would get a motion blur effect in the background *and* the subject, just less pronounced with the subject. Almost like an after-image of the subject since the camera is moving with it.

It depends on the distance of the subject and its direction as to whether it would have blurring itself with lower shutter speed.

if both the subject and camera are moving in the same direction at the same speed, the subject will not be blurred

Of course, normally people are standing in one spot when something else is moving. Thus, it kind of rotates slightly to the camera and has a chance of blur depending on speed of the subject, closeness to the camera, and shutter speed.

Yea, I was envisioning a subject moving parallel to the camera track. Like a person running or a vehicle moving with it.

Right, i did some looking around, and all of the photos i can see with the background motion blur bokeh are taken from far away using tracking, like for cars or birds or something. I'm thinking like portriature up close but with a moving colorful background

I think the only way to do it is to make sure the subject and camera move together

Yea that's true. Probably because, in films, a big part of the scenes often have to do with the surroundings. All this talk makes me want to go out and try this. Wish I had the equipment, but I may just have to wing it. Maybe get a skateboard and try it with someone running. Up my f to the max lol

I tried it a bit with my bellows kit, it's too dark outside for me to try it with any sort of colorful background, but I'll post some test shots tomorrow

Thanks, I didn't even know what I was doing back then, not that I improved a lot since.
Here, have a motion blur and slightly out of focus roe. Getting shafted by a jumping stabilization, feels bad man.
Full stabilization and panning don't mix well.

Here's what i managed with a little synth with leds and my tripod

Looks pretty cool, but I imagine more colors than just red, maybe outside in a forest or something, would make for a more interesting background.

I have no clue how I would do this with a person though, maybe a chest harness? Not sure how people do it in movies

Me too. When the stabilizer resets the image jumps, so the af working and the image jumping from the af point made it to focus under the belly on some dandellions. Then the stabilizer stabilized the image and the roe moved hence the extra motion blur. Luky that the ISO 5000 noise masks some of it.
This was a lucky shot, I was still on the road in the opening to the meadow when I saw her and as I raised the camera to aim it jumped and ran to the bush line.

Probably my first shot that I actually thought was a good photo.
Had it printed on aluminum recently with AdoramaPix, but it didn't come out as deep and black and contrast as I'd hoped. It has almost a green tint to it, which was a bit disappointing.
Might try just a regular print sometime soon as well.

had spot metering on and swept the camera just past the eagle and the camera exposed for the sky
