Hey guys, Posted the other day in a "Do I have Hope" thread talking about composition and resources to learn to understand it. I called upon my resources to get this composition project from a photography professor working at San Diego State University I'll post all the images that she uses to explain the image and I'm also free to do reviews of the project and offer tips. I'm not the best photographer in the world mind you, and some people may take offense to some of my criticisms, so be forewarned. This stuff, while focused on beginners is also good for you old timers to use too, keep those minds fresh. have fun and kick ass /p/

>>3184873 neg space has a general overpowering color to a smaller subject that doesn't take much space in the photo, very useful for cityscapes
OP
>>3184876 The decisive moment is fairly difficult to do and its subjective nature makes it hard to understand. The decisive moment is scene based, finding a way to make the whole scene connect, or a moment that is uncommon to hard to photograph. If you want to study a good figure for this, Annie Leibovitz's work for rolling stone has tons of this kind of photography, she was so deeply involved with her subjects it's like she wasn't there and she was able to capture them in their raw form. this skill is critical to street photography. it's more than capturing movement.

if you can put all your photos into a pdf or online gallery like imgur I will 100% review them for you, or you can bump the thread with 25ish photos, your choice.

>>3184840 Here are some photos that I've taken that just fit with the ideas, I didn't go out and take this for this obviously. I have most of them but I'm missing a couple.
1- Using rule of thirds
Obviously, the tree falls along the rule of thirds on the bottom and left when they intersect

>>3184840 >>3185599 2- Same subject different points of view
Half Dome in Yosemite, one as seen from glacier point, the other from a bridge along the valley floor.

The narrows in Zion National Park.

>>3184840 >>3185603 Oops, realized I messed up on 3 and 4.
5. Same subject varying distances. All are photos of the empire statebuilding. One relatively close, one in the distance framed between the bridge piers, and another from inside (not really of the building, but I didn't have one that fit other than that)

>>3184840 >>3185604 6-Framed Subject
Another shot of the empire state building, this one with a 400mm to really exaggerate the framing

>>3184840 >>3185605 7. Subject relates to background
This is a singular flower in a massive field of flowers, so the color bokeh in the back can be interpreted as other flowers

>>3184840 >>3185606 8- Rhythm, Pattern, and texture
In order from left to right. The disney concert hall in Los Angeles. Small corn lilies in a meadow in Yosemite National Park. And the a close up of ice texture during the winter in Yosemite National Park

>>3184840 >>3185608 9a. Vertical Lines
Scripps Pier in San Diego. The pillars of the pier create regular vertical lines
Picture taker !t04DnNtdRw
>>3184840 >>3185609 9b. Converging Lines.
I think this is an agave plant. I found it clinging to the side of a rock while scrambling up a large rocky hill.
I didn't have the other two examples unfortunately for the diagonal lines, or s curve

>>3184840 >>3185611 10. Visual Contrast of light and shadow
This is a waterfall in yosemite national park. The way the sun was positioned was pretty special because it was at such an angle that it was only shining directly on the water, yet the shadows were still covering the rocks behind the water, creating a pretty unique image.
Picture taker !t04DnNtdRw
>>3184840 >>3185614 11- Negative space
Not the finest example of negative space because the space isn't blank, but it still achieves the same effect, showing scale by comparing it to a larger area. This is the skyline of San Diego as seen from Coronado Island

>>3184840 >>3185617 12-Decisive moment
It's one of the few images I have with actual movement happening in it. Sand falling from the rock only lasts a few seconds, but it's really not that decisive. There was a guy with a small toy shovel pouring the sand there, lol. It was taken in Antelope Canyon, near Page Arizona
And then I don't have a number 13, I just don't have any images that break the rules.
OP
>>3185617 op here, firstly I live in San Diego myself and it is very nice to see such a beautiful negative space of our skyline. I think what really helps push this photo to amazing levels (which is evident in all your photographs) is that the negative space is continued by the water, with the purple tones of that sky reflected beautifully.

>>3185638 Funny, I live here in San Diego too! East county. The San Diego Skyline truly proably is one of the most photogenic skylines because of the bay right there. It allows for actual reflections without waves getting in the way. It's always difficult for me to take the time to drive down there, it takes me like an hour, so obviously, that's not the easiest thing to do if you're trying to get a nice sunset.
