So this thing supposedly magnifies at around x0.71 and turns your APS-C fov in a full-frame FOV

Only problem is that shit is expensive and rn it's simply better to wait for a7ii to drop in price after the inevitable a7iii release.

My question is: are there any more affordable versions of these being made by other companies or is this a Metabones special ?

I have a M43-APSC speedbooster and it's fantastic. The secondary benefit is that it also gives you an extra stop of light, so can turn an f1.8 lens into an f1.

Zhongyi make speedboosters which I've used and are good, but with no electronic contacts. There's also one more company but I can't remember the name.

I mean in that case, ideally speaking a Metabones + a7ii combo would be a medium format camera for less than $2K wouldn't it?

Own the Ultra and modern lenses here with Micro Four Thirds. Makes a great low light setup since you have stabilization in fast glass that doesn't have it. Good for videos too.

You really have to watch for what glass you're using: It won't turn shitty vaseline covered glass into Otus memes.

it doesn't make much sense since medium format lenses are relatively slow (usually f/2.8 or slower) and the focal reducer doesn't get enough coverage to utilize the full image circle, so you don't really get smaller dof than with fast native ff lenses. Medium format optics aren't really anything special either and you'd still be dealing with "just" a full frame sensor. The only merit of medium format is the large image area, so you get the final image with smaller magnification compared to smaller formats, thus the image looks sharper and less noisy.

Focal reducers just works better for apsc and m43.

If it helps, it's because I have actual Canon camera bodies that I shoot with almost every day. I just got the adapter because it was on sale for a ridiculously low price one day and I thought "Why not?"

Maybe I'll go out shooting with my sony Nex C3 and Canon 24-70 f/2.8L tomorrow to be ridiculous.

Looks like you can't get it down to a 1.0x crop factor, but you can get it to 1.28:

(Tried searching for other brands, but not hard enough to actually find one. Some other company's offering might go the full .5x reduction)
