Only the center point was really usable, especially in lower light, meaning that you had to either focus-and-recompose everything (which always carries the risk of missing your intended focal plane at large apertures) or just frame everything dead center, neither of which are very good options.
Plus, even when your extra points are usable, they’re clustered pretty tight in the middle of the frame, which makes them barely useful even if they were usable.
>>3190377One thing I will say for the 9 point af sensor in the 5d2: it was nice being able to go directly to any of your AF points with a single direct joystick press. On the 5d3, you need to move the joystick multiple times to go from center to an edge (although it does have the nice feature that center-press on the joystick takes you between center and last used previous point).
Also: there’s something to be said for buying a cheaper body and spending the rest on either glass or a plane ticket.
I’m guessing one or two other things, too. Interchangeable focus screens maybe?
