Hey /p/, do you know what DSLR has the highest dynamic range measured by its stops? I don't mean the HDR function that almost every camera has, I am meaning the dynamic range achieved in a single image shot.

Why I like a high dynamic range is that you have maximum control over your lighting when it comes to editing. But it also will give you a very natural image, just as you saw it in real life. Having shadows and lights always being way off it's expectations you wont get the original look of a motive.

Photos are only lifeless if its motives are unimaginative. Say, a picture with a silhouette of a face may be good for a low dynamic range and has fulfills an artistic purpose, but other situations (which most of them wont be as artistic as this case) won't necessarily benefit from low dynamic range.

Photography is about taking pictures of stuffs that impresses your eyes. If your eyes can barely see it, then there’s no reason to even take a picture of it. If your eyes see shadow or darkness, then it shouldn’t be something else.

That's all photography is about at first. What you want to express with it is completely up to you.

The human eye of course can see fine details in shadows that are not always apperceivable

Dynamic range is not the only design aspect which are making photos look 'impressive'..

at that point you're exceeding the dynamic range of what your eyes see, making it very unnatural and weird looking

have you seriously never noticed your eyes adjusting walking in shadow into bright sunlight? how everything is blindingly white for a half a second?

The reason we have high dynamic range at all is because cameras still suck at seeing what our eyes see. To use hyperbole our eyes have about 50 stops of DR but the best cameras and films don't surpass 20. You look at a well-lit scene and see all the details in highlights and shadows but most cameras can only expose for one area and sacrifice the other.

they don't you just need the better exposure settings. or set everything to auto if you're still struggling with the best setting. you don't need that much dynamic range to make your camera be able to see what your eyes can see. even a prosumer DSLR from 2008 can do that for you. unless, of course, you're a working professional that doesn't take time before taking pictures.

Go ahead, shoot with the camera facing the sun at sunset. Watch as most cameras majorly under expose and make everything in the foreground almost black.

The reason your eyes adjust is because the iris of your eyes widen or narrow depending on the amount of available light. When it's dark, your pupils grow larger to let more light in, and when it's bright, they have to narrow, so when you step out of a very dim area into a bright, sunny one, it takes a moment to adjust. This has nothing to do with dynamic range though. Your eyes can still make out plenty of detail in both light and dark areas even if you're sitting at a dim corner coffee shop looking out onto the street. Your camera however is most likely going to expose for one area at the expense of the other, and the only way around it is post processing adjustments or bracketing shots and blending them.

Your retinas do have a limit to their dynamic range too, though. Try looking into an unlit room when you’re outside in the sun for an example. Or look outside again once your eyes have adjusted to the darkness.

I just went and stood by the window and did some metering. From the brightest white outside, to the darkest corner of my bathroom, was about 10 stops. Plenty of digital cameras can do that nowadays, although whether the lenses can handle that is a different question. I didn't really feel like I was anywhere near the limits of my vision, however. Also DR on digital is largely a product of noise (how much you can ramp up the gain before the SNR becomes unacceptable), and humans eyes are -really- low noise.

My point in this thread was that if you exposed the scene you just described, you would either have to expose for highlights and boost shadows, or expose for shadows and boost highlights, depending on which option is best suited to your camera's film or sensor. This is where "dynamic range" is useful, despite the other anon arguing it's fine when everything is high contrast and you have areas of pure white or jet black in the scene, even if that's not the story you're trying to tell.

These are not different things. Everything after the photon hits the receptor (and receptors -can- see single photons) is part of the visual processing, so there's no such thing as an "unprocessed" eye.

Likewise, there's no such thing as an unprocessed image out of camera. The noise performance and the processing are inseparable.

I am this >>3194717 guy. I generally like high-ish contrast and slight underexposure as it creates more interesting images. But i agree, having the full range available is preferable. Then you can edit and keep the super-vision full-fat course of every single fucking detail visible, or crush some and create something more interesting than bland 1/1 accurate reproduction.
