Infrared photography
Old Nikon D90 is old but still works. 50k exposure on the body. Nikon believes 150k exposure life expectancy.
Thinking about having life pixel convert the D90 to infrared.
Has anyone done the conversation?

I haven’t had the conversion done myself, but I’ve got a 40D I bought pre-converted. It’s fun to play around with if you have the means to convert a spare camera.

Man that is a funky photo. Reminds me of miniature photography like for train sets. Not sure why. Probably because of color and lighting for those sets being odd and unnatural like viewing that image.

Speaking of infrared photography is it easier to do it with film or a normal digicam with an IR filter? I tried with my 700D and the results were really meh, I'm thinking of buying some IR film and trying that out

Yes, infrared light focuses slightly differently from normal visible light. If you have an IR camera with live view, you can manually focus it using live view and it’ll be accurate. Otherwise, you need to either focus normally and then adjust to the infrared equivalent focus (higher end lenses will have a little red dot to tell you where that is) or get your AF system modified to focus to infrared with one lens and just use that lens.

You can try Owax IR film, it's a really good hand rolled IR film. And not that much expensive (22$ for 36 exp.)

Here's some picture I've done with a G7 and a 25mm 1.7

I tried both the ilford sfx 200 and the rollei infrared film. They are fickle, fog easily, and aren't very fun. I didn't like infrared until I got a converted digital camera.

When they convert a camera to IR, they usually replace the IR cut filter with a visible light filter right over the sensor so you don’t have to worry about that unless you go full spectrum (or you mean what filter to use for an unmodified camera, in which case Hoya R72 is what I used to use and it was fine).

This is a hypothesis that doesn’t actually stand up to any significant scrutiny unless you’re high or a fourth grader.

No one ever wonders if the C# I hear is an F two octaves down that someone else hears, but that makes exactly as much sense as the “I wonder if the green I see is what you see as red” idea.

How did you get these colourised? when I tried doing IR on my 700D all I got was purple images. I used a 850nm IR filter.

850nm is too deep into IR for false color. Get the "standard" 720nm filter.

Because I'll likely forget all about this thread, if your camera is converted to full spectrum use something like a 695nm. This will still let in a bit of color giving you a lot of room to play in photoshop. If unmodified camera I *think* a 720nm would work better. Not sure how much visible light your camera will pick up with that.

I used a 720mm filter
I use a custom profil camera with really low color temperature
I switch Red/Blue in the channel mixer in Photoshop and then I edit in Selective Color function
Post your RAW I can try on it

So, I just need to open the DSLR, remove the sensor glass.
Cut one visible light filter (would this Hoya R72 be fine?) to the same size, and replace it on the sensor?

I see more IR video with just black and white rather than the types of color I see here. I'm assuming that's due to security cameras that specialize in IR video. But what's the difference between security camera black/white IR versus IR from a converted camera Another question is that since the IR filter gets removed, is the digital sensor more prone to damage from UV light (as in are the IR and UV filter on the same filter and both get removed during the conversion)?

I bought a converted one on eBay. No complaints. There's a $20 ir lamp by Kodak that you can get on Amazon. Works pretty well with it. I haven't made any art with it yet, but I did have a fun few days playing around.

These frames are black, but transparent to ir light.

You know what? I don't remember trying it with a regular flash. The ir lamp is continuous (and the camera is live-view only) so composing is a little easier. Plus you get a cool ghost hunter vibe.

Sometimes. Conveniently, the shitty cheap flashes are more likely to be full spectrum, since filters to give you pure visible light is one of the many corners that Chinese companies like to cut.

Humans are not capable of infrared vision in the eyes themselves, but some animals do have other methods of absorbing light. IIRC, infrared exists in some snakes and possibly some deep sea fish. However it's more "sensed" independently than seen.

Many various birds have ultraviolet receptors in their eyes, and it is believed Van Gogh for example could see UV after an eye surgery. It does change the way you see colour.

An old boss of mine (red) colour blind. Said it appeared more as a dull brownish grey, and certain other colours (E.g. green) were not as "vibrant" as in other people. He was of course basing this on description and reaction from other people, not his own observation. If we made presentations where he'd be present it was something we had to consider.
