>>3196974Firs toff, not everything has to be "filmic" or "cinematic". there are so many other ways and styles of filming and producing videos. Hollywood is on the brink of existential collapse anyway. the current way productions are going is series; smaller chunks but more content altogether, more crews, filming more places and plotlines, production of entire seasons in one year that still adher to the language of cinema.
Second, shallow DoF is overrated like almost no other meme. Going through a lot of classical movies from the 70s all the way to the 2010s, I tried to see which scenes actually used a super shallow DoF and found very few. many iconic scenes have very sharp backgrounds in fact. Lighting, positioning, movement and colour are so much more important.
Third, Super16 is a thing. people still go for that look. it has a smaller sclae to it, a more "in the real" tone popular not just with indiefilms anymore.
