The a7s is the go to if you need to take videos of slow moving things in moonlight or low resolution sports shots and that's about it.

The rolling shutter is way too shitty to use for most video work, and the sensor resolution being so low it'd make for a really niche use photography camera.

There is a couple of things wrong with your arguments. AF speed isn't relevant when you use manual lenses which has clickless aperture which is what you want for movies.

And I have never seen a hollywood movie where they shake the camera from side to side like mad like they do in those youtube reviews.

As for the stills, it's high enough resolution to fill up a 4K screen, which none of you probably even have.

If all your shots are static you might have a point but love that thing even the slightest and it's jello everywhere. It's better in the mark II versions of those cameras but still not worth considering for serious video use.

Not if you use manual lenses. Any serious film makers would want a good manual lens with clickless aperture.

I'm primarily a film shooter and shoot on an om2 most of the time. I want a digital camera that I can use for both stills and video. I do mostly street photography and portraits but I'd like something for video too. 12mp doesn't really bother me too much. I'd go for the a7rii but it's around 4000aud whereas I can pick up a used a7s for 1800. It was either the a7s or the omd em1 ii but the a7 has the edge with low light performance. I'm pretty much sold on the a7s but I haven't even looked at something like canon or nikon

Get an a7ii instead of the a7s, it will be more well rounded for photo and video with stabilization and still offers log video. unless you really need to be shooting in low lit scenes

The low light performance of the a7s isn't something that I'll need all the time but when i go out at night it'll be something I use. What I'm interested in is how the high iso performance translates to stills rather than video. Am I still getting clean stills at 8000, 12000, 25000 etc?

This question has an obvious answer :
It’s really expensive so if you can’t afford it it would hurt your saving/credit whatever.

You might not need a camera with those features. There might be a lower costed camera that does what you want for cheaper and will still make you happy.

Running about in public with such an expensive camera will attract attention from thugs who might want to steal the camera from you to sell it for cash

Other than that I can’t think of anything.

I never mentioned autofocus speeds in my argument. In fact I specifically mentioned "low resolution sports photography" as a field that would benefit from the A7S.

You don't have to because that's only one way to measure a rolling shutter. Any fast moving object is going to get distorted by the shutter not being able to get the full object at once, that's how a rolling shutter works, and that's why it's good to have a camera with a fast video shutter.

Saying your camera can satisfy a 4K screen isn't a bragging point as even the cheapest phone these days can take 8MP images. 12.2MP is a handicap is you ever need to crop your work and don't even try to tell me you "always get perfect shots so I don't need to crop".

If you're not tied to a specific company you might want to give the Nikon D750 a look, you can pick it up for 2200 AUD it's good for both stills and video and can take some pretty clean shots up to 25.6k ISO:

I actually bought a A7S II a while ago for the same reasons you have. I don't know if I'm going to keep it (it was pretty pricey even though I got a good deal) but I figured that it is cheaper to buy it use it for a few months and sell it (if i don't like it) instead of hiring one. So ask away if you need to know anything.

No I'm not certain yet. If it's worth it the pain of the price will fade away fast. I will re-evaluate by spring so I have plenty of time to learn the camera and learn if it's for me. So far the high-iso is just incredible. ISO 6400 was a stretch on my other camera but this one doesn't break a sweat even at ISO 25600 and up. It has a great grip and the custom buttoms are very nice, you can pretty much change whatever you want. The electric viewfinder is solid as well, I had a Nex 7 for a while and this one is in a different league. Also it has a good weight balance, it feels solid but not heavy. On the other hand... it drains batteries, it's gone in a blink of an eye. I got a few extra batteries and powervaults and that isn't a luxury. Also the build quality, it feels good to me but i'm very careful. The menu is better than the Nex but still not great. If you switch the shutter to noiseless you can't use the movie profiles. It's a quirky thing, still like it though.

I think I'm pretty much sold on the a7s at this point. I'm tempted to spend a bit more for the a7ii but i feel like I'll be missing out on low light performance. The only thing holding me back is the 12mp sensor. As a film shooter, 12mp is fine for me but I feel like it won't be too great in the future. I should be fine though

You will be thanking the stars it's only 12MP when you have to sort thousands of images.

24MP RAWs have insane filesize as it is, but 42MP is literally mindblowing, and will force you to invest in a closet of harddrives.

You won't get cleaner night time images at higher ISO just from downsampling the 24/36MP image and filtering it.

Manual focus is what I'm used to anyway. I plan to get an adapter for all my OM zuiko lenses. Focus peaking is something I'm really looking forward to with some of my fast lenses. Does peaking work through the evf or only on the rear display?

They work on both the EVF and Rear Display. You can reprogram a button on the back to switch between rear and EVF display since the proximity sensor can be a bit slow sometimes.

From what I've seen the autofocus is fine and if it can focus faster than i can manually then it's good enough.

I regularly shoot on film slrs which don't have any IS at all. With the extra money I save getting the first gen, I can get an OSS lens if I need it. The high iso performance means I won't have to resort to extremely slow shutter speeds to get a shot in low light. IS doesn't matter to me

4k doesn't even matter because I don't have a 4k display

I went from a D810 to the a7riii. I used the ii versions in store and would highly recommend getting the Riii. The older versions felt super sluggish and clunky compared to the new version. I like the form factor much more for my kind of work and don't have to worry about heavy duty weather sealing/ocean resistance. The video quality has made me start shooting video more and the autofocus is much nicer than the d810 (for what I do)

These doesn't really bother me that much. I've tried out an A7 and found it alright to use. Probably better when I get used to it as well. The battery I guess can get annoying, but I dont mind flipping it on and off when I eye it up to/down from my eye.

I'd love the a7riii, but I would have to save up for another half a year to full year for that, and I buy used so buying an earlier version now and selling it later again wouldn't lose me all that much. Maybe I'll stay with the D800 a bit more. Haven't decided quite yet

Yeah, in the older gens you're locked out of controls while the buffer is clearing. This was pretty eye opening to me, the Riii doesn't do this. The overall speed of menus/loading is also much faster, like going from review back to shooting mode etc. I used to buy cameras that were already 2-3 years old and this is the first time I've bought one at release so I know what you mean about waiting. It's a very expensive system to get into. Nikon definitely had a better price-performance ratio with their 1.8 primes and previous gen lenses. Also I've yet to burn through a full battery with the Riii with their new ones

Hah, this happens with my D800 as well, but might be because I bought the cheapest memory card I could find.
Yeah, Sony is really expensive I've found out. Seems like theres lots of 3rd party companies making lenses now though which is nice.
I hate how indecisive I am with choices like this

Yeah I have the A7sII for a month now and it burns through the battery like a MF, especially now with it being cold. I bought it in mint condition for about Eur. 1900,- and the A7r III and A9 are still too pricey. The A9 second hand is about 3500,- now but still too much for me.

Video performance of the A7ii is utter crap. Big crop factor, soft as fuck video images, line skipping/binning and huge moire issues. Plus, no 4K. Better yet, the 1080p mode of the A7ii looks worse than Canons 1080p mode.

3rd party manual/adapted lenses are still a good option but the continuous AF performance on the Riii is really cool. I mainly shoot portraits/lifestyle and its responsiveness and feedback is awesome. It also grabs onto eyes/faces with lenses wide open perfectly, it's made me realize how bad of an idea shooting f1.4 lenses on a DSLR is when you don't have them calibrated perfectly. Also the EVF on the a9/Riii is significantly better with the higher resolution and refresh rate compared to the previous gens

It's not so much that, it's that a DSLR doesn't take in the information to know if it's focusing on an eye or the lashes.

The sony, because it's reading the image off the sensor, can use ai to tell the difference between the 2 and always get it right.
