I wanted to enter the world of photography, so I dug up my father's old reflex.
I changed batteries, extremely gently dusted the lenses and mirror with a microfiber cloth, and bought a new film. I know nothing about photography, but I've already looked up all the technical details of photography (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, DoF), and read the camera's manual; what I fail to understand however is the functioning of the lenses, especially the big one, since neither the manual nor google could tell me what those lines are and how to use them.

Can you help me /p/?

Those lines are the depth of field guides. The number on the line is an aperture setting, and the line shows you what DOF to expect at that aperture. Since longer focal lengths have less DOF, the lines narrow as you zoom in.

So for instance, if I understand correctly, assuming an aperture setting of 32, with the lens zoomed and focused like you see in the OP, everything beyond 10 meters will be in focus, while an aperture of 8 will give me a DoF that is tightly centered around 20 meters.

Precisely, however you want to avoid that setting because of diffraction which kills image quality, f/8-f/16 is the sweet spot on those lenses, anything beyond f/16 will induce diffraction

Not a bad kit OP, lenses for that camera are cheap too.

I use FD lenses a lot, and one of my favorites is the 50mm f/1.4 which I picked up for $15

Wow, that's great. I'll thank my father for having chosen a good kit almost 30 years ago. Now that I'm thinking about it, all my family photos prior to 2006 have been shot with this camera (it's been used extensively and it shows: I fear there's sand in the mechanism of the big zoom), and now I'll use it again to document mine.

No real tips it's a basic 35mm camera and it will make good pictures in the hands of someone capable.

FD prime glass is dirt cheap and this here >>3202516 is not out of the ordinary. S.S.C. lenses are optically superior, which means Super Spectra Coating, it's what most of Canon's lenses use today. L lenses are meme glass, you don't need them to take good pictures, I used to have them and yeah they're nice but I ended up selling them for fast primes.

I'm not familiar with the T60 but you may want to check the light seals in the film door of that camera most cams from that period use them and if it does (oddly my T90 from the same period does not) you will need to get them replaced. Foam kits are cheap on ebay and most are DIY and if a fat trucker can do it while waiting for his next load you can too

I have yet another question: the viewfinder incorporates a series of LED, the manual calls them "exposure meter", that tell the suggested shutter speed or the shutter speed it's going to be used if auto is selected. While playing with the optics and trying to focus things in my well lit room I've noticed the suggested shutter speed are low, 1/8 or slower, reaching 1/30 only when focusing the monitor with f3.5 selected; the manual explains that camera shake is likely to occur at speed slower than the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens.

Is the light sensor working correctly? I didn't expect that these camera required so much more light than what's in my room right now (four 450lm LED lights for a 12 square meters room, plus a 810lm desk lamp pointing upwards).

Depends on what ISO your camera is set to. Not sure if that body is new enough that it sets the ISO automatically from your film or if you have to dial it in manually.

In general, though, yeah, your bedroom lit by artificial light isn’t very bright at all for photography purposes, especially on film. So slow shutter speeds are expected.

Thanks for the answer, I'd never imagined that you'd need much more light than a human's eye would suggest for photography. The camera has manual ISO setting, and I've set it to ISO 200 because that's the ISO of the film I've bought.

The camera must be 30 years old, and in the past ten years it has been stored in a sealed plastic box inside a wardrobe in a basement, so it didn't suffer bad environment conditions; there are other piece of foam like that in other places that are still quite spongy and don't show significant signs of degradation. My fear is to make more damage than good, but if it isn't that difficult I'll change them. Still, I think I'll go through a roll of film (those photos are going to be shit anyway) to see if the camera actually needs those seals renewed.
