If you're not, depth of field is also a function of distance to your subject. The closer you are, the shallower your depth of field; the further you are, the wider your depth of field. Stars are about as far away as you can get.
Try it out. Take a picture of your finger at arm's length with your lens wide open, then take a picture of something down your street.
