You're somewhere and something catches your eye. Talk me through your process.

- Do you just snap a photo or do you take a long time to set up?
- Are there things you think are more important? Lighting? Movement? ISO? Something else?
- Do you find yourself making a lot of adjustments?

I go outside and take pictures around town. this is my usual method:

I try to decide a route in advance, I research it online (google maps) and see if there's anything interesting that I want to hit along the route. Once I've decided, I draw a crude map in my notebook with some key spots marked down.

In practice, I don't always hit all the spots I planned to hit, nor do I follow the route exactly as I planned. Sometimes I find something more interesting and I let it take me where it may. However, this has fucked me up sometimes, because I end up taking too much time on detours I lose the light I had planned towards the end of my trip.

Sometimes my planned route yields absolutely nothing, except for a handful of forced snapshits. I've tried that whole, find a good place and wait for the perfect subject, but it's just not for me. I have to keep moving, or else I start collapsing.

I've never tried this...normally I just wander around...I will try this out

Question - Do you instinctively try to go for a certain subject? Like, "today I want to shoot people" or "today I want to shoot landscapes"? Or do you just shoot whatever you find?

I scope most of the things out from google maps. I also have a list of my local area of things I've passed by that I want to shoot given the correct circumstances (lighting, diff season, etc).

Almost all my lenses are manual focus and I absolutely prefer that when doing landscapes. I don't do many snapshits and they usually don't turn out good, so I bring my trusty 1 lb pringle-can-sized tripod wherever I bring my camera.

I am always curious what people do that gives them the most creative, artistic results. Is it spontaneity? careful planning? it's interesting to hear two people planning out the routes beforehand. I usually just go where people are.

I live within an hour of shit like picture above and world-class hiking trails. Before I go on these, I kind of have an idea of what to expect. Inspiration comes in bursts, often when I'm out for the first bit I'm always questioning why I'm doing this. After, I'm always glad I did.

I find the process of finding areas in google maps almost as exciting as going out and shooting.

I too got to a point where I almost get physically sick of people who talk about gear. Their photos are almost always unoriginal shit. If I spend 2 hours researching lenses I almost *always* feel like shit and am more confused than before I started. If I spend 2 hours editing photos or looking for new spots, I feel reinvigorated.

Mike Rowe has a quote I like: "Don't follow your passion, but bring it with you". i.e Don't wait for inspiration to strike, go out and shoot.

I'm usually thinking in terms of the story. I don't consider individual pictures I think of a sequence of pictures that will be presented with a text to tell that story.

Because of that I usually have a good idea of why I'm where I am and know what I am looking for. In many cases, though not all, the story will have been thoroughly researched in advance.

I always want people in my photographs, so that's not really a choice I have to make. When I'm deciding where to go, I'm thinking about a what theme to pick. The themes are usually based on a geographic location (chinatown, beach, etc.) or an event, such as a parade or festival. In my most recent trip, I traced the route of a public cycling event, which was convenient since those are designed to hit interesting landmarks along the way.

Even a "static" event like a parade requires planning. As you can see in this photograph, I specifically chose this spot to take pictures from in advance. I wanted a "money shot" background. Nothing says Hollywood like Betty Boop with the Capitol Records building and Hollywood & Vine sign right behind her.

Taking pictures of people, the background is very important to me as it can add a lot of meaning to the photograph. Of course, being able to have a meaningful background is not always possible. That's why I enjoy them, they're rare and I always do a "fuck yeah" quietly to myself when I get one of those. The locations are planned, but the people and what they're doing are not, so if there's any spontaneity, it emerges from that human element.

I would walk around and look for something that would make an amazing photo. When I find something I will look at it for quite some time trying composing the shot in my mind. When I'm 100% satisfied I would close my eyes and engrave in my memory. Then I would walk away not taking the shot.

Depends on the required exposure. I take as much time as I need. I go out to shoot to have something I can do at my own pace without having to consider anyone else's wants and needs. It's how I stay sane while in the office and on the clock.

As personal preference I like calmness and absence of people, but I've shot at events like enduro racing and air shows. Overall I pick the slowest shutter speed that still works for the scene and stop down the aperture as much as I can. Lowest ISO possible. Pic related is Velvia 25.

I don't plan things out more than going to a certain location of interest. Once there, I shoot whatever catches my eye and wander around where the moment takes me.

Sometimes I'll have a long-term goal (like 5 or 6 km away) but more often not. Eventually I'll have seen so much that I'll start aiming for neighbourhoods that I've never been to, or simply taking alleys/streets that I traditionally don't take. Best way to see a city if you ask me.

I almost never snap something right away, unless the moment is about to be lost. I usually stare at something for a little while, walk around, look at it from different angles, then wait to find the shot, and pull the trigger.

I try to only take 1 or 2 shots of a given subject, instead giving it a second to find the most striking or impactful way angle.

I take a time. Not a fan of snapping.

Yes, sharpness. But everything you said is important. ISO is the least important, but in some situations the grainy and lower overall sharpness can be very grateful to your results.

I try to take exactly one photo of each subject, unless I'm in the studio or something. I try to visualize the composition and get it right as quickly as possible without second-guessing myself. It's a fun little challenge for myself.

It's also nice when I'm using film; when I get my prints back, it's a little disappointing to see any almost-identical frames.

For basic stuff, I don't find myself making a lot of adjustments. I can pretty much nail a snapshit on my first try. For more complex stuff (how bright does a flash have to be so it shines through skin? What happens if I manually fire the flash during a long exposure? etc) I can spend an hour adjusting stuff.

I never rely on post to fix something. My job has me in front of a computer for 60 hours a week, and I really don't want to spend any more time using one. I'd gladly spend an extra hour behind the camera if it means avoiding 15 minutes in front of the computer.

tl;dr if I'm just in the mood to take pictures, no more than 5 seconds per frame and one frame per subject. If I'm in the mood for Real Art ™ I unleash my true autism.
