those are some of my latest shots.

I recently started taking photos of birds.

Do you always use the smallest aperture? I found myself always using f4 (smallest on the only zoom lens I have) to have a shutter speed of at least 1/600 (+ having some bokeh), otherwise if I go with a smaller aperture I end up increasing iso and my shaky hands can't a sharp images with shutter speed bellow 1/400 (70mm+ focal length)

have you use any app to attract birds? Do they work?

I'm thinking on getting a 300mm lens, any thoughts? Do you need a tripod for 300mm? I'm worried it's going to be hard to get sharp focus without tripod

No, you don't need a tripod for a 300mm. But you'll need a good hand to go slower than 1/250 shutter speed

A simple monopod setup with a tripod or walking staff is the most you'd need unless it is rather overcast and dark. You don't even need to attach it, just use it as a 3rd leg and touch the camera to it. 300mm is great. The wider your front lens the more light it will bring in and the faster you can do exposures.

I haven't seen shutter speeds faster than 1/200 without flash in like....ever. This one was 1/50 I think with my 300mm kit lens. Everything is so overcast these days it sucks a lot.

Tripod/walking stick are memes. You'd really only need them when camping round some swamp. What you really need is learn to shoot birds in flight without any help. More often than not, it'll be the only way to shoot them, so get gut. It's doable.

Find a better angle. Find a composition where the bird is not dead center. Wait for a better posture of the bird, head preferably parallel to focal plane or looking at a slight angle forward. Compensate exposure for the lightness of the bird.

Move further away, get a longer lens or crop more, or climb a tree.
Or maybe just wait for one to perch on a lower branch at a cleaner section. Birding is not the easiest task to do right.

Also try to close down aperture to f/8 to get a sharper image. You also have to think about placing the subject in a big enough DoF.

I'm thinking of getting an AFS 300 f4D and TC-14EII. Has anybody else here shot at 450/600 mm hand held/monopod without IS before? How difficult did you find using a lens like that? Anybody here use that specific combo before, or components thereof?

I use a 300/4 with a 1.4X TC. In-body shake reduction is not very effecive at this focal range, maybe at 300mm without TC somewhat, but I always use my telephoto at 1/1000s and upwards.
You shouldn't have much problem, you might need some time getting used to the long focal length and holding it stable. I much more prefer handheld than fiddling with a monopod.

I know this feel. I don't like using flash and everything is dreary in the winter and I prefer to use as small an ISO as possible (100 for this camera) so I'm constantly doing burst shooting in hopes that 1 out of 10 is not blurry. When it works it really works. Otherwise, I end up getting this most of the time.

Been trying to work on my bird/wildlife pics, I usually shoot with a 28-300mm but every once in a while I try to snipe some close shots with a 60mm macro from my living room.

It is a D3400, ISO is a major bitch on it. I'm allergic to noise. Same here >>3206695 only I fucked up and it was at ISO800 for some reason. I think I may have been holding down the iso button when I rolled the wheel for exposure without realizing it since I was wearing gloves. Here's the full sized image, bad noise and all.

If you're going to gear fag, worry more about sharpness or aberrations or something. You have a top of the line APSC sensor that can tolerate shooting images up to ISO 3200 or 6400 and printing them 20"x14". If your downsized internet snapshits dont even rate. Stop pixel peeping.

You're a gerfagging moron. There is no noise in your silly pigeon photo. Coming from another anon, so get it to your head. Use manual focus, have steady hand, better lense and you'll get a clear shot.

Noise is the last thing you look at in bird shooting anyway. ISO at least at 1000 will often be the only thing allowing you to take the shoot.

Most of the photos ITT are shit simply because of noise and grain. That has nothing to do with gearfagging and everything to do with how you take photos. If you have a large screen like I have (over 3' wide) it makes a big difference too. The 1000px rule limit for images makes them look like postage stamps. It isn't worth looking at those since they are nothing but reduction artifacts or worse jpg artifacts. The full sized ones fit fine on the screen, but you can see everything that's wrong with them. If there's grain/noise then it REALLY sticks out.

Picked up a 70-200 f4 in order to try my hand at a spot of wildlife. Before I even got to use it, and as I was walking around one day with my 50mm on this chap lands on a bench next to me and basically sits there posing for 15 minutes. I doubt I will ever get as good a shot on the 70-200. Sods law in action.

There are a lot of reasons I don't do photography anymore, but this thread was on the front page, and I took a look, and now I think I'll share a bit.

Birds used to be my bag. Since it seems to be frowned upon I'll not post anything from zoos or controlled environments (like the raptor show), just stuff from the wild outdoors.

If I recall correctly I was lighting the feeder and the birds with the sun bounced off a mirror because otherwise they were in shade.
