I have a few telephoto lenses and will be getting some pretty beefy ones later on. Taking a photo of a human being is probably the last thing I'd think to do with them.

The problem here is the zoom factor. The zoom factor of the p900 is like 83x while the zoom factor of most 2000mm lenses is.....1x-3x. this is why 83x is terrible in comparison to a 2000mm 1x camera lens. Don't compare the zoom factor of a point and shoot with the focal length of an SLR lens. Those are 2 completely different things.
