What is the best relatively cheap camera or make/model to buy when first getting into SLR shooting or analogue photography?

Found two cheap items for sale online. A Cannon EOS 300V and a Pentax ME Super (pic related).

Have wanted to pursue analogue photography for quite some time. The aesthetics, authenticity and the process of developing photos are really appealing. Not to mention, every shot means more as you can be as wasteful as you want when shooting from a DSLR.

If you are planning on shooting manual, and you are just a beginner, the actual body doesn't matter that much. Some of the better cameras will have auto exposure modes, higher shutter speeds and a better viewfinder, but what will largely determine how your pictures look is the lens and the film stock you choose.

Look for something durable, and something that either uses batteries that are easy to find or is mechanical and doesn't need them at all. Above all, if you are buying online, make sure it's been tested and works. Other than that shit, just buy whatever is good value and appeals to whatever aesthetic you're going for. Me personally, I like the old mechanical Minoltas (SR series).

Are you saying that it doesn't matter what camera you get because the quality of the photos are all down to the lens and film stock? Forgive me if that's a dumb question but I am fairly new to this.

Yeah that’s right. Basically if you need a light meter, get a body with one, but if you’re fine with manually focusing you’ve got hundreds of equally capable options for similar prices.

Only thing i would really add is that it’s not a bad idea to prioritize your desired lens mount when you look at bodies. If you are building a DSLR system, it’s nice to have compatible canon or Nikon lenses already from film shooting to carry over. Stuff for m42 or K mount is plentiful and cheap and adapts really easily to mirrorless systems. Don’t worry about it too much though.

I have and still use an ME Super, the second owner since new. I been a good reliable workhorse, uses two batteryis SR44 (silver not alkaline LR44) which I change about every three years, But take the batteries out and it will still work, but only at 125s. Loads of lenses availbe for them too.

Big thing to consider with older cameras, mines 30 years old, mechanicaly they are reliable, but by this age the foam light seal start falling ot peices. Some are easy to replace, other require strip down to get to.

Mine needed stripping down to get to some, the cost was more than double what people are asking for second hand cameras. I was happy to pay it and get the thing serviced at the same time, but knowing that I would not be paying what some pepole are asking for second hand cameras, considering they will need attention too.

I just picked up a mint Nikon FM2n from a pawn shop for $50. It's never been used, still had the little "don't touch the shutter" note when I opened it up. Thing feels like I could bludgeon someone to death with it and take their portrait right after. Irrelevant to this thread, I'm just excited.

Doesn't matter what body ya get, find something cheap that won't break. Canon AE-1, Pentax ME Super, all good options. Check your local pawn and antique shops!

I would highly recommend the Canon AE1. Fantastic cameras and not particularly expensive. Canon FD has some of the nicest lenses as well.
