Yes and no. Relying entirely on substandard equipment as your 'secret sauce' is vapid bullshit, but never allowing yourself to experiment with nonstandard stuff is the opposite of creativity.

tl;dr shitty equipment isn't necessarily cancer, but it's also not insta art either.
