How do I take skateboard pics that aren't boring? Im not a skater but my young friend is, he's having a birthday at a skate park tomorrow, I wanna take pics but every skate pic seems to be the same thing.

How serious is your friend about skateboarding? Anyway, the way I see it there's probably thousands of great photos of someone doing a kickflick, but there's probably zero great photos of your friend doing a kickflip. Before you start trying to think outside of the box and doing something new and innovative, maybe cover your bases first, play it safe and get your friend those staple shots that he probably doesn't have yet. After that you can worry about doing something not boring.

Skate pictures have formed to be their own genre of photography, there's a certain way of doing them that if you don't like, you're free to ignore - however if you don't do it their way everyone will ask "Wow these don't look right at all!"

This. Since time is of the essance, go to thrashermag.com or skateboarding.transworld.net and look at the photos there.

Be sure to include the ground, as it's common for people that don't understand skateboard photography to isolate the skater against the sky. Obviously use a fast enough shutter speed as to eliminate motion blur. Learn how each trick is supposed to be timed.

TLDR: Go on the websites above and analyze the photos.

Solid recs, those are my go-to.

OP, compose the photos in a way that makes for a beautiful composition once the skater is included. The skater is what completes the photo.

use a fisheye and get close, no one has ever done that before, most skateboard pics are telephoto from a distance

This. Take a look at some of the greats like Atiba Jefferson etc.

Then you'll just need a Hasselblad, a fisheye, a bunch of flashes and some slide film.

The best way to take skateboarding pictures is if you know how to skate yourself. That way you know what to look for and when to properly time photos and such.

I skate and shoot the homies a lot messing around

Thanks man. I got a shit ton of flat ground pics, just too lazy to go through em. Regardless taking skate photos can be a lot of fun.

And you don't need to always adhere to the typical rules of photography/skate photgraphy like fish eye on everything. Get creative

Odds are your friends aren't good and doing crazy impressive stuff. You can make a standard trick look dope by using your photographic skill. The the photo beautiful and any trick can be elevated and look awesome.

Pic semi-related. This dude is good as fuck, but for this shot he was just messing around with some back tails. Tried my best to make a park shot interesting using the shape of a bowl and a slowed shutter speed.

I made a composition with the wall and then timed it so the skater was isolated nicely against a clean part if the wall to elevate the composition.

Skateboarding is a hugely artistic community, boring skate shots don't belong. Get creative!
