New 35mm Camera

I've had a shitty Richor for the past couple years and want to upgrade to something nice that I'll be fine with for the rest of my days.

I'm thinking of either a Nikon F2, Olympus OM2/2N or a Canon AE1, but I'm not too sure which is best or best value with best and cheapest glass. Any opinions?

Is there anything im leaving out?

Buy the G1 in your photo. Great camera.

As for SLR's most are comparable. Avoid cheap glass and get nicer stuff. That's really where you'll notice the difference in image quality. I personally like Nikon SLR's but that's probably because I was giving an FG. Canon AE's are nice but you'll be paying extra because people are hyping them up at the moment.

I think you'll get some good value shooting Olympus/minolta as there usually passed over in flavour of Nikon/canon.

Some of the Contax SLR's are quite nice and you'll be able to shoot with that lovely Ziess T* lenses.

You want a "dead" mount, i.e. that can't fit or be adapted to fit modern dSLRs. Therefore, the Olympus or Canon.

Both are very good when it comes to lenses, in most cases the olympus ones have much better build quality and are really ergonomic, and very compact.

Also the OM2 is not comparable to the AE1, it's comparable to the pro bodies like A1 and F1.

I prefer the olympus because they got everything right. Tiny camera, huge bright viewfinder, great meter and well damped mirror slap. Really a pleasure to use.

Also the G1 with the Zeiss lenses is great value for money and a step above everything else.

Nikon F3, prices are down right now and there’s a P variant of it (more weather sealed and tougher) for like $220 on eBay, half the regular price. Also the FA and F2 are damn good.

Don’t get the AE-1, get the A-1 or even F-1n for the same price. AE-1 prices are fucked up

They’re getting a lot harder to find, but for the price you can’t beat a Minolta X700. It’s a super lightweight camera with great meter and otf automatic flash exposure and amazing, inexpensive glass. Some people will complain about the flash synch speed of 1/60s, but you’re going to own an nd filter anyways just use it.

I got mine mint for $40, mint 50mm 1.4 for $50, sharp af mint md zoom 35-70 3.5 for $56, and a sharp af mint modern equivalent 70-210 RMC tokina for $15.

You'd be fine with a Nikon F2/F3 or FM if you're short on budget. But the Olympus OM2 is a good choice too

try to choose a lens first, then you see what camera you'd get

My budgets £200 (270usd)max with a good lens, that's more than id like to spend, but it's my maximum for something that will last me.

Nikon FM2, older model with spot metering. the 1/4000 shutter is great to taking advantage of fast lenses if your looking to get a nikkor 50mm 1.2 in the future. ive seen them with 50mm 1.8 lenses for about 300 usd. also the black version looks crisp as fuck.

or you can just get a pentax K1000 to try out SLR's and see if your gonna like em. Theres plenty out there for like $50-$100 with the 50mm 1.8.

Buy an Olympus OM series camera, OM2 is great if you want better metering but honestly I've been using the OM1 for years and after since getting the OM2 and a Nikon F3 I always go back to the OM1, which is entirely mechanical aside from the battery powered lightmeter. It's dependable, small, inexpensive compared to Nikon's, great build quality and zuiko glass is amazing especially compared to the price of Nikon glass. The only bad thing about the OM series imo is the fact that they were designed to use mercury based batteries (you can have your camera modified to accept a variety of batteries though, mine takes 357s) and the hot shoe is pretty badly designed and is likely to crack/break, but mine is still sturdy enough to hold a flash I just use a pc cord which can be had for a fiver.

But yeah I'd go for an OM series camera and a lens or two for that price, really can't go wrong

If you own a soldering iron it's actually very easy to adapt an OM-1 to modern 1.5V batteries.
You just need to screw off the bottom plate and add a diode to the wire leaving the battery compartment.
IIRC there are even tutorials on youtube for this.
If you're not too clumsy it takes like 10 minutes, tops.

Or you can just do nothing and use use a zinc air battery that behaves exactly like a mercury one when it comes to constant voltage, and works out of the box even if it's smaller (still makes contact).

If you're on a budget, but still looking for quality and a wide variety of lenses I'd go for the Nikon FE or FG. I got my FE for $100 on KEH.

Those batteries are more expensive than bog standard silver oxide SR44s and last just a few months IIRC.

An MR-9 adapter's a convenient option too, but also expensive.

I'm a cheapskate, so I'm glad I went with the permanent 1$ diode fix.

For _starting_ photography I would say the instant feedback a digital camera can give you is more useful.
Once you've got basic exposure down and won't just be wasting frames, go shoot film and have fun.

I've been looking local and found a cannon ae1 for 50 with a few lens unknown condition and a mint Minolta x700 with a 58mm 1.4 for 85. Any thoughts? The ae1s seem like they were entry level but had a great marketing campaign and used plastic while the Minolta was one of their best manuals.

get a pentax LX if you're going to get an SLR.
here are some reasons to choose it over the other cameras you've listed / and the F3
>most sensitive meter ever installed in a camera, accurate to -6.5 EV (3 minutes at ISO 100 and with an f/1.4 lens)
>full weather proofing(not even the F2 or F3 have it)
>true OTF light metering(camera will adjust for changes in lighting conditions during exposure. No other cameras can do this)
>mechanical shutter speeds from 1/90 to 1/2000 + aperture priority
>TTL flash metering with standard hot shoe(F3 uses a propriatary shoe and can *not* be converted)
>constructed from black chrome instead of brass, thus will retain black coloring as paint wears
>match needle metering(F3 uses a shitty LCD, AE-1 has no needle to match against, F2 uses LEDs if you get one of the better prisms, OM2 doesn't have full viewfinder data)

I wish we could make statements like that with digital cameras. I guess we pay, for the lack of needing to buy film, by needing to pay for repairs after the warranty is up.
