I’m an unrepentant gearfag. I bought an E-PL2 yesterday just because I saw it in the store and happened to have enough money on me in cash to buy it. I don’t have any real use for this camera other than to take test shots comparing it to my other cameras.

I have two RZ67s which I rarely use. I have a cabinet full of cameras, all film except one, but I judt keep using the OM1 because it's my favourite camera ever. I haven't been in my darkroom in ages and I use D76 1:1 because I'm too impatient to wait out the longer developing times in 1:3. Also my main film is Fomapan 100. I gave my gf an OM1 because she said she wanted to get into photography but she barely uses it so I secretly used it as a parts donor.

There, that's all. I am a horrible person.

I buy the cheapest lenses and only have one lens fast enough for dark light conditions. Also I just bought two Helios lenses, one old 13 blade one to use for real and the other to fuck up with hacky lens modifications. I’m addicted to taking and processing facial portraits to such an extent that I’m neglecting other types of shots. I like putting faces an inch or more out of focus all stopped down to get a controlled soft look.

I have never ever tried the raw mode on my Fuji. I just chose a suitable jpg film simulation and roll with it. The colours and exposure are perfectly on point literally every time, and if they don't it's 100% your fault.

I am totally obsessed with gear and photography lifestyle. Mainly with my appearance, like how the camera looks on me etc etc

I have a D90 i rarely take out with me. I mean the last time i went outside with the camera was like, 3-4 years ago. Last time i took pictures was my for cousin’s products and just fiddling with it in my room.

Idk if k really like this hobby or not. But i WANT to like this hobby, i want to belong in this scene and being seen as if i know a lot about this thing.

I often fantasize about what gear i would use if was a professional photographer, i also often fantasize doing interviews and answering people’s question about how i’m still fighting my parents about making money out of photography. Well, i’m 24 and jobless, still haven’t got a job since graduated.

I just have a really low self esteem and i hate perfect people or people that are genetically superior to me. Like i would use photography or other hobbies to make me feel like they’re more of an idiot than me.

I spend my time everyday browsing M43 gears and fantasize using them, deciding what i WOULD use to activities that i wish i could do without anxiety. WHILE having a D90 i rarely use, because it’s bulky and makes me feel self conscious and DSLR is just so last year, man. People wouldn’t see me as a cool unique guy. Also i think the best photos i’ve seen are taken with either 35mm film camera or MFT. There has to be a correlation between creativity and the size of your camera. I believe if Cartier Bresson was to use a D750, he wouldn’t be as legendary.

Since you haven't seen a therapist yet to deal with your low self esteem, what if you got into photographing miniatures? You can build tiny worlds in your room, and macro stuff is pretty technical.

There's your answer. Off the effay scale, just carry it around, shoot like 1 or 2 frames a day, or none, plus manual focus is legit fiddling and you'll need the practice. Also Olympus slrs are the same size as their mft descendants. Yw.

after the past ten years (maybe 50k shots) as a mildly dedicated amateur, I've found that photography sucks

taking a good/compelling photo involves tons of luck and a little skill, and even then nobody will care, since there are so many photos in the world

Not really. It depends on what you’re shooting. Many of history’s greatest photographers have used large format view cameras which, as the name implies, are pretty big. A lot of them have also used bigger medium format bodies. Famous war photographers have generally tended towards SLRs. Most of the great photographers working today are shooting DSLRs; you just haven’t heard about them because they’re too new to have made it into the history books. A lot of great street photographers used Leicas, but that’s mainly just because the ones you’ve heard of started working in an era where Leica was the only company making decent 35mm cameras and the alternatives were things like TLRs and view cameras.

One definite correlation: a good photographer will get good photographs with whatever gear they have. Put a cheap point & shoot in Henri Cartier-Bresson’s hands and he’d have taken great pictures with it.

You have a D90. Go out and shoot it.

I do like the CLACK of my DSLR. Often more than the resulting picture.

I do feel miserable for using APC-dslr, just because FF exists.

Deep inside i do not think my actual photos will improve when i'm rolling into FF, but i'm saving for an old FF.

I hate that 50/1.4 turned out nearly useless on crop. Have to admit - the colours were awesome.

50/1.8 is fucking great, i hate 1.4 or 1.2 even exist.

After years i still cant decide between lightweight mirrorless and a DSLR with battery grip, between prime and zoom, between flash and natural light. I just want it all.

I collect cameras like a gearfag. Love vintage and old-school cameras. I'll go to antique stores and buy broken cameras with no intentions of having them fixed (mostly because it costs too much to get them repaired). I primarily shoot on a D5300, which I love, or a Canon K2000, and yet I never improve. I watch tons of videos, look through tons of books and my style changes, but I am still garbage. Hopefully one day I'll improve. Also I actually enjoy Technically Correct. Yeah. When I bought them it was cool for a bit having Xbox hueg negatives, but the fact is that it was a lot more expensive to shoot, I could take fewer pictures per roll, the camera and lenses were fucking huge, the lens selection is not very versatile and unless you want to carry a bunch of shit you’re limited when you shoot, lenses are expensive af, the cameras aren’t feature rich, flash is more complicated, shits less rugged, and if shit breaks you’re really fucked out of a lot of money.

Oh also fuck medium format compression and bokeh. I had to stop the lens down so much to get the dof I wanted that it limited my light and shooting. Bokeh is a meme.

I just shoot on my Minolta x700 and Holga 135 now for film and xt1 for digital. I prefer 35mm film. Medium format is a draw because it’s a plateau with a barrier to entry to aspire to. Nothing much going on when you get there.

Over the last years I've spend more and more money on gear because of irrational quality demands where on the other hand I've more and more stopped to shoot for my pleasure up to this year where I roughly just shot on commission. My gear is still reasonable as I rely on third party for high-end primes and bodies that deliver just quality and not bleeding edge professionalism or bleeding edge functionality.
The whole package feels huge, heavy, uncomfortable, cumbersome - all in all tiring for me. The exact opposite is what I see in mirror-less systems, which I've studied and tested with their beginning. While I was considering purchases, in the end there were always deal breakers that prevented me from doing so. Where I'm currently happy with evfs and battery life and I'm willing to change wide apertures for compactness, missing corner resolution and further image/lens errors stopped me from taking a dirt-cheap offer.

I think the Nikon 50mm 1.8D is a shit lens. Mine gives dull, lifeless colors and tones and the chinky aperture ring gummed up after a few years. Guess it's clickless now, for better or worse.

I find my ancient AI 50mm f2 to spank it in every aspect, especially colors and sharpness, and it cost half what the 1.8D did.

I have a box in my freezer that's full of great films, including some out of production rolls.

I honestly don't even think I remember the basic functions of the camera.

I'm not sure I'll ever shoot it.

In college, I wanted to get into film photography, so I borrowed my dad's 35mm camera from the 70's, which was in pristine condition and which had a whole bunch of sweet lenses. He even had a vintage leather camera bag.

I shot some decent stuff, but I never really got that into it. For a while, it was sitting in the back seat of my car. One day, I accidentally left the sunroof open and it fucking rained. Being a complete fucking moron, I didn't think get the camera out of the bag or try to dry it all off. Instead, I left it in there for a few days, in the middle of fucking summer, which made the car a fucking steam room during the day.

Once I finally realized that it was still in the back floorboard, it was fucking too late. The camera itself had rusted in several spots. Some of the seals were fucked up. Every. single. fucking. lens. had mold growing on it. The leather case looked like a fucking terrarium.

I spent the next year of college scrounging keh and ebay and every camera i could find to methodically replace everything. The hardest thing to find was that fucking bag.

I've still got that rusted, molded pile of filth in a box. I'd feel bad throwing it away since it's the real camera he bought and used when he was in college.

I fucked up my work's D4 by shooting in the rain at an athletics carnival (I normally shoot Canon, no idea if D4 should be water tight) and signed it back over to another guy just before the end of the year.

He then gave back to the main store room at our work before moving interstate.

Eventually someone will find that it doesn't turn on and he will be the last name on the sheet saying everything was complete and functional.

There's a photo of me carrying it too. No idea what lens was on there but I was pretty sure I checked that there was an O-ring so I thought it would be fine.
Lens was either an 18-200 or 28-300. Can't remember which.

Why do you think those D&B mockups exist? Because they were telling the printer how they wanted the photo printed. You really think a busy photographer had time to sit there and run off thousands of prints?

I don't even like photography anymore. It was a passing phase while at university. I just pretend to be into it because my family is so happy I got a hobby and they buy me photography shit every birthday and Christmas. They think photography brought me out of my depression but now it's keeping me there.

Not him, but photography did it for me. I don't get stressed out about sucking tho, and I take most of my photos now with a point and shoot. It's mostly just a way to make sure I get out of the house and see some friends, instead of just picking fights on 4chan.

Not sure. It's the wet season in my town so It rains heavily a few hours most days. I was shooting in it for a couple of hours with the 28-300.

Camera was fine until the end of the day at least. Didn't try to turn it on until at least 2 weeks later and it did nothing. swapped out batteries, opened and closed battery/card doors.
No signs of life.

I only do photography because I want to feel the fulfilment of creating art while having the instant gratification of potentially being able to take a great photograph just with the press of a button without having to spend years learning the technical skills to create art.

It's not that hard. Obviously it helps if you have been drawing from an early age.

An interesting, engaging image has very little to do with the medium. A toddler's potato print can be amazing if it has a good eye. An adult tryhard will produce a nasty brown mess.

The main difference between painting (little kids usually do painting first) and photography is that painters usually commit to a composition and omit aspects that are unnecessary at the first conception of the image. Photography on the other hand involves working with what you are given. No amount of pre planning, exposure calculations and optical conjecture will trump a real picture.

Also art is free. The back of an envelope and a free promo pen is all you need. Try it, do a class. If you still can't create an interesting image... well try something else.

Whenever I see someone post photographs from Japan I get bitter because I dream of traveling there and it seems to me like people praise pretty much any crappy photograph taken there because of how photogenic the country is. Until I get to travel there myself and take some pictures I will never know if I could do better.
