Are drones actually good for taking great photos/videos?

Do you have any experience with them?

What tips could you give a photo newbie like me to gradually improve?

I hate drones with a fucking passion but that’s only because I work in national parks and am also a climber.

I’ve lately been more open to drones for other photography purposes, unless they can design them to be quieter they can still be pretty disruptive in specific situations.

Drones are illegal in quite a few parks, but people just don't realize it when they have cheap drones without the onboard live maps.

My friend bought a drone that I sometimes fly for giggles. I'm trying to learn to make tolerable 3D models with it. Stills wise yeah it can do them but it's underwhelming. I used to shoot with some regularity from a small plane. The results are just so much better from a plane that it seems like a waste of time to bother with a drone unless absolutely necessary. Shot from a hot air balloon once. It was pure delight.

Except one plane ride costs as much as a drone unless you know people. Nobody takes a literally who on a plane for a photoshoot ride.

Download the Hover app, it'll give you temperature, wind speed at different altitudes, and a live map with that day's flight restrictions.
I fly racing miniquads and assuming you have a good GoPro, you can get pretty sweet images

which means if you have a great Tx and vTx with 15dBi patch antennas, you can sit right outside of the park, fly your drone in, and be well within the law.

Not true, but being in a plane will not necessary allow you to make good shots. It moves, crazy glare, vibrations, no time to find good composition, dirty windows... Drones can make better shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBISLuA072k

There's plenty of small planes that can go slow with windows that open... The only thing that is sucks is it can be cold in the winter with the window open and holy shit bugs hurt if you're going fast.

You can invest in drones for heavier cameras like mirrorless or D-SLR. Hex/Octocopters are a thing. They're incredibly expensive though, and good luck not suffering a heart attack while you fly your $4000 kit in the air.

Of course they can function. I'm not terribly clear on the exact reasoning fire overhead's/FAA stance, but I would bet a lot of money that its about safety. As a wildland firefighter safety is our number one priority, enough fire fighters die every year as it is. You would be surprised as how little a thing can bring down a helicopter.

I was really thinking about picking up the spark as my first drone, I know a lot of people will say save up for a Mavic but what little video I shoot is in 1080p anyway - and really just want something that'll let me take some pictures at weird angles.

Drones are like birds, but harder to shred and too dumb to move away from the blades. And you never know when a drone operator is going to be SUCH an asshole that he decides it would be fun to actively *try* to take out a firefighting aircraft for the lulz.
